Pride Of Lions backstory
Since 2003 Jim Peterik’s post-Survivor purveyors of classy melodic rock have been crafting the kind of tunes FM radio was built upon 40 years ago.
And the acclaimed songwriter’s latest collab with powerhouse vocalist Toby Hitchcock — Unbridled — maintains a run of gilt-edged genre classics.
After bursting onto the scene with a bold self-titled debut, Pride Of Lions have amassed a back catalogue of bangers at the heavier end of the AOR scale.
And if there was a distinct drop off on 2012’s disappointing Immortal then Peterik and his pals rediscovered their mojo on follow-up Fearless (2017).
The pandemic era Lion Heart and 2023’s Dream Higher delivered a swathe of sweet tunes with Hitchcock, in particular, cementing his reputation as an immoveable melodic rock feast for the senses.
Eight albums in and Pride Of Lions are still purring.
In Jim Peterik’s own words
“Edge Of Forever is one of my favorite tracks from Unbridled.
“But to be honest, I wasn’t sure how are fans would respond to it.
“It breaks with our tradition of songs of positivity and light and replaces it with the feeling that the world situation seems to keep getting more and more unsettled.
“It poses the question ‘are we standing at the edge of forever?’.
“Toby and I offer hope, of course, for a better world by joining hand and coming together.”
Verdict on Edge Of Forever
It’s impossible to escape the echo of Survivor as Edge Of Forever builds into a generational melodic rock anthem.
This is peak Peterik. Polished, powerful and oozing passion.
The shiny production affords both Peterik and Hitchcock the opportunity to engage in the kind of vocal dualling Pride Of Lions has become famous for.
And after a strangely subdued first chorus, a foreboding track bursts into life.
Mike Aquino’s mighty axework adds a thrilling layer of retro-fuelled AOR.
But Edge Of Forever’s a carefully judged balancing act between the song and the singers.
Pitching Peterik and Hitchcock as Pride Of Lions’ mane men is key. Job done.
