Static Abyss backstory

Autopsy vocalist/drummer Chris Reifert and bassist/studio engineer Greg Wilkinson know a thing or two about death metal.

And as Static Abyss, they unleashed sonic terror on the world back in ’22.

Debut album Labyrinth Of Veins was a festering spawn of the Coranavirus pandemic: recorded in the legendary Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, where the pair could ‘socially distance’ the opus made our Death Metal Albums of 2022 list. It “explored a tortured landscape, where songs like Tectonic Graveyard and Morgue Rat Fever slithered and skittered their way into deformed life”.

Just a year later, Static Abyss returned… and Aborted From Reality twisted through our speakers.

And now it’s time for album three. The Dying Hunt was recorded at Wilkinson’s own at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, and features Necrot drummer Chad Gailey – with Reifert leading the charge on vocals.

The title track is the first song to be unveiled from the album…

The verdict on The Dying Hunt

Reifert has long straddled doom and punk – you only have to delve into the Autopsy and Abscess to realise that.

And that brutal combo is applied to maximum effect here.

Static Abyss hit hard with jarring riffs, depth charge tones and the kind of creepy psych-out that has become their hallmark. The Dying Hunt is also catchier – and arguably more direct – than much of the band’s previous work.

Reifert spits and snarls.

Wilkinson warps his fretboard with pure malevolence.

And Gailey steps into the drum stool with ease, tackling the track with his trademark flair.

When it comes to organic, authentic death metal, Static Abyss truly deliver.

The Dying Hunt will be released via Peaceville Records on August 28.
