Ten years ago this month a North East institution closed its doors for the final time as The Mayfair made way for a massive cinema, restaurants and bars now known as The Gate.
Spanning four decades as the biggest rock club in Europe, the venue played host to every guitar band worht its salt including the likes of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Guns N Roses and, famously, Nirvana. This wasn’t a memorable gig – maybe it had something to do with Brown Ale – but on the back of mega seller Siamese Dream there’s no doubt Billy Corgan’s mob were the must-see band towards the end of 1993.
