Black Eyed Sons backstory
Risen from the ashes of a broken Quireboys, Black Eyed Sons are the rebranded core of that British rock and roll institution.
A bullish response to a bruising breakup arrived in the shape of star-studded album Cowboys In Pinstriped Suits earlier this year.
That raucous response to a difficult two years represented a thrilling rebirth for Griffin, Paul Guerin, Keith Weir and the Mailing brothers.
But one thing was missing — the hoped-for Angry Anderson collab on Dig Me Out Of This Hole.
Guerin wrote a fabulously fresh song with the Rose Tattoo legend firmly in mind.
But for various reasons deadlines were missed and the band’s debut was pressed without the voice of late 80s smash hit Suddenly.
Now that situation’s finally been remedied with Anderson joining Scotti Hill (Skid Row), Chip Z’Nuff (Enuff Z’Nuff) and Ronnie Simmons (Rose Tattoo) on a remixed version of Guerin’s killer track.
In frontman Guy Griffin’s own words
“This is a brand new version, not on the album.
“Due to time constraints and touring commitments, we missed the deadline to include it and at one point the vocal got lost somewhere in Australia!
“We finally tracked it down and it’s too good not to release.
“It was great to have Scotti play on the track, who we’ve always admired as a guitarist and a good friend that we’ve toured with over the years.
“I read an interview where he said he wished he had more opportunities to play slide guitar, so I called him up and said we had just the track for him!
“And like us, he’s a massive Rose Tattoo fan.”
The verdict on Dig Me Out Of This Hole
Guerin’s a criminally underrated songwriter who still has a few neat tricks up his sleeve.
And the genial Geordie’s penned a gritty, sleaze-soaked blues rocker that has Hollywood crime caper written all over it.
A suitably dramatic video clip presents the Black Eyed Sons and their special guests as grizzled gamblers and criminal kingpins.
And it’s immediately obvious why Guerin wrote this song for one of his rock and roll idols.
It’s a tune that requires a degree of ‘lived in experience’ and if the album version works perfectly well then Anderson’s a powerful presence and the perfect pick to lead from the front.
Let’s not forget, for all their decades of hard gigging, Black Eyed Sons are still a band in the ‘building momentum’ phase.
This sharp as a tack single’s just the boost they need ahead of a big finish to 2025.
Dig Me Out Of This Hole boasts quality in spades.
What’s next for Black Eyed Sons
Attention’s swiftly turning to a busy run of UK shows across November and December.
Black Eyed Sons play a Hard Rock Hell double bill from November 6-7.
After that Griff and the gang play eight headline shows culminating in a Camden show at The Underworld on December 20.
