Giant backstory

Originally formed in the late 80s by brothers Dann and David Huff — together with the experienced jazz and rock keyboardist Alan Pasqua and Nashville session bass player Mike Brignardello — Giant swiftly became a big noise on the pop metal scene.

Dreamy debut album Last Of The Runaways dropped in 1989 and immediately forged Giant’s reputation as masters of their melodic rock craft.

Follow-up Time To Burn maintained the momentum as the Huff brothers broadened their reach and doubled down on their talent for top notch AOR.

In 2001, Frontiers prompted Giant to release III — more of the same but with a fresh focus that inspired a new generation of melodic rock wannabes across Europe.

Dann Huff’s burgeoning reputation as a producer of award-winning country music meant he couldn’t commit to a full-blown reunion but, with his blessing, the band pressed on regardless.

Promise Land (2010) kept the pot boiling before Kent Hilli stepped up to take on lead vocal duties — helming 2022’s Shifting Time and Giant’s hotly anticipated sixth studio album Stand And Deliver.

In Giant co-founder David Huff’s own words:

“Making Giant records has always been our passion!

“Thanks to everyone at Frontiers we can make our dreams happen.

“I know it’s a bit of a different lineup but whoever is in the lineup the legacy of Giant lives on.”

The verdict on Hold The Night

Giant never dealt in mediocrity — everything about the ridiculously talented Huff brothers screamed pure class.

And had it not been for the rise of Seattle’s grunge scene then a band out of time could have given Toto, Journey et al a run for their money.

On their glossy new single Giant might Hold The Night — rather than The Line — but the quartet’s lost none of its scene-leading AOR bombast.

And as Kent Hilli settles into his second album at the helm it’s clear that one of melodic rock’s unsung heroes is fast making up for lost time.

Hold The Night’s a gem of a track driven by Jimmy Westerlund’s expert axework and a kick-ass rhythm courtesy of David Huff and Brignardello.

Giant — should have been bigger.
