Delain backstory
Symphonic rock royalty, the Dutch powerhouse first burst onto the scene in 2002 when Within Temptation tinkler Martijn Westherholt broke ranks to form a new band.
Delain went from strength to strength with charismatic frontwoman Charlotte Wessels bouncing off Westerholt’s intricate melodies.
And six outstanding albums secured a lasting legacy with the likes of 2006 debut Lucidity and back-to-back UK Top 50 albums The Human Condition and Moonbathers defined as genuine genre classics.
But Westerholt and Wessels parted ways following the release of 2020’s Apocalypse & Chill — leading to doubts about the band’s future.
Sander Zoer and Ronald Landa returned to the line-up and in 2022 Diana Leah was revealed as the rebooted band’s new permanent vocalist.
Dark Waters dropped last February to critical acclaim — becoming the band’s first German Top 10 record.
And the Dance With The Devil EP, featuring the title track and a slew of live cuts and alternate versions, looks set to maintain the post Wessels momentum when it’s released in November.
In Martijn Westerholt’s own words
“We’re really excited and eager to share this new Delain song with the world.
“It captures the recognisable and signature sound of Delain but with a fresh and modern touch
“We’re thrilled to have brand new material ready to be released!
“In addition to the new songs, it was fantastic to have captured some magical live moments of our European tour earlier this year as live tracks for the EP.
“This video was shot the day after we performed at Summer Breeze in Germany.
“We still had the adrenaline of that show in our system and were stoked to be able to carry that energy into the video.
“We had a blast! The video contains a dramatised depiction of the struggle between good and evil — the war we all wage both without and, often times, within our own selves.”
The verdict on Dance With The Devil
Dynamic. Driven. And undoubtedly divisive.
Just your typical Delain song then?
Martijn Westerholt knows his strengths and Dance With The Devil’s another striking example of symphonic metal at its hypersonic best.
Apparently navigating the post-Wessels era with ease, the band’s focused founder has found a new creative muse in the shape of Diana Leah.
And a genre renowned for its lung-busting frontwomen may well have landed on the new queen of theatrical hard rock.
Leah impressed on Dark Waters and shows no signs of slowing down here.
Ronald Landa’s harsh growls add the necessary to grit to what could easily drift into lame Eurovision territory.
But Leah’s the real star here: Dance With The Devil’s a hellish return from the new girl.
