Nails backstory

The world of extreme metal rejoiced when, after years of silence, Todd Jones was pictured in God City Studio with producer and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. Nails, finally, were returning to the fray.

The Californians’ last album, You Will Never Be One Of Us, was released way back in 2016 and in 2020, all seemed lost when drummer Taylor Young and bassist John Gianelli both quit the band.

It looked like curtains for one of the 2010s’ most revered acts, a band who had infected the planet with their rabid blend of hardcore, grind, powerviolence and death metal.

But founding vocalist/guitarist Jones has assembled a new line-up, with Ulthar guitarist Shelby Lermo, Warbringer drummer Carlos Cruz and Despise You bassist Andrew Solis all coming along for the ride.

In June, the quartet hit hard with Imposing Will, our first taste of new album, Every Bridge Burning.

And they’ve been quick to land a follow-up blow in Give Me The Painkiller.

In Todd Jones’ own words

“This band was modelled after some of my favourite bands; the type of bands where, when they put out an album, you know what it’s going to sound like.

“It’s the delivery of the expectation.”

The verdict on Give Me The Painkiller

Opening with one of their finest ever riffs, Give Me The Painkiller is the medicine Nails fans need. Two minutes 43 seconds of ferocious, savage bliss, the song sees Nails harness the energy of Venom, Motörhead and Entombed, and annihilate everything in their path.

Combine this catchy, snappy attack with the devastating grind of Imposing Will, and there’s every reason to think the new album will be topping AOTY lists come December.

No one does it quite like Nails.

What’s next for Nails?

Every Bridge Burning, Nails’ fourth full-length, will be released on August 30 via Nuclear Blast. Following its release, Nails will be hitting the road for a North American tour, along with 200 Stab Wounds, Mammoth Grinder and Tribal Gaze. They’ll also be making a long awaited re-appearance at Damnation Festival in Manchester on November 2.
