…and for fans of metal it is THE day as far as this year’s Leeds Festival is concerned as Metallica headline a bill boasting Tenacious D, Avenged Sevenfold and Mindless Self Indulgence.

Here’s hoping lite rock merchants Plain White Ts don’t benefit from the withdrawal of Slipknot with an extended set but if it means a couple more songs for the main men then rushonrock won’t be complaining.

We’re expecting big things from main stage openers MSI and could it be Feeder who pull the surprise set out of the bag? Back with a new album and headline UK tour this could be the year when we remember just how rocking these boys can be.

Dropkick Murphys have a lot to prove – aren’t they just a pub rock band with a record deal – while Alexisonfire should open a few eyes and ears with a high profile set.

I’d love to see the Sevenfold posse give James Hetfield and co. a run for their money and let’s hope the Leeds crowd enjoy Tenacious D for what they are – a modern day Spinal Tap with good tunes to boot. 

But of course there is potential and then there is proven class. And a day after Metallica released their new single to radio stations and fan sites it really is time for the godfathers of thrash to step up to the plate. And talking of plates I can’t wait for my annual fix of overpriced tempura….
