wednesday-tall@ Newcastle o2 Academy, March 31 2009

One day there will be no more Mr Alice Cooper and maybe that’s the day when the cynical rock community will wake up and take notice of Wednesday 13. So he wears his shock rock heart on his sleeve and pours forth straight from the celebrated and oft mimicked Furnier songbook. So what? We can’t watch Alice every night – why not back his bastard son from time to time… Read the rest of this entry »

wednesday-bloodworkWith his Bloodwork EP dividing critical opinion (no change there then) and a final headline tour before hooking up with one of his many side projects, shock rocker Wednesday 13 is back in the North East tonight.

Headlining Newcastle’s o2 Academy, the former Murderdoll guarantees a great show – if you like your rock with generous helpings of sleaze and a huge slice of horror cheese. But the fact that he surrounds himself with a shit hot live band means there’s few better value gigs on the live circuit right now. With support from label mates Chelsea Smiles it’s a great way to see out a truly Mad March for rock across the region and you’d be an April fool to miss it. Read the rest of this entry »

Not In Our Backyard

backyardBackyard Babies mainman Nicke Borg has admitted the Swedes are gutted that they can’t get on a UK festival bill this summer – despite nailing spots across Europe.

With the band still riding high on the back of last year’s self-titled album the UK is readying itself for more sleaze rock action as the fourpiece embark on a co-headline tour with The Rasmus. But those of us expecting the Babies to pop up at Download, Sonisphere or Leeds/Reading this summer look like being sorely disappointed. Read the rest of this entry »

thunder-liveHe’s just out of the picture (left) but Thunder’s Danny Bowes isn’t normally backwards in coming forward – hence we always enjoy a chin wag with one of the finest frontmen in rock. And with the Brit heroes counting down the days before they finally call it a day (again) rushonrock grabbed the voice behind Love Walked In to take us through why Thunder are bowing out.

One performer with plenty left in the tank is shock rocker Wednesday 13 and one of the jewels in the Global Music crown returns to his record label’s home tomorrow ahead of what promises to be a typically weird o2 Academy show in Newcastle. And he’s bringing along label mates The Chelsea Smiles along for the ride… Read the rest of this entry »

alex-harvey-bandIf you want to understand just what 70s rock was all about then the pick of tomorrow’s new releases will, at the very least, point you in the right direction. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band never lacked modesty and maybe this month’s top pick explains why.

But if you prefer you rock rooted in nu-metal and with growling vocals to boot we’ve managed to bag a belated copy of the new Static-X record which is selling bucketloads on the other side of The Pond. And we’re not quite sure why. It’s not even as good as the latest album by German thrash metal newcomers Drone and that really is saying something. For the rushonrock verdict on all three read on. Read the rest of this entry »

eddieIt’s back – the post which picks on some of the scariest characters on the planet, pulls their reputations apart, pokes fun at their features and then runs off like a giggling girl before the shit hits the fan.

This week we throw the spotlight on a guitarist who makes grown men cry just by looking at them – and makes rock fans weep when he starts solo-ing like the devil’s spawn dressed in heavy leather and rusting metal. Those of a nervous disposition look away now. Read the rest of this entry »

giant-resizeGiant – Stay (Remix) (Huff/Pasqua/Stephenson) b/w Get Used To It (Huff/Stephenson/Naish) 1992

Two cracking hair metal albums and one massive hit single ensured Giant etched their name into MTV-friendly rock history at a time when the genre outperformed every other kind of rock.

If you can imagine a US band boasting perfectly styled hair, superbly chiselled features, glorous guitar solos and cringetastic choruses then this is that act. When 1990 single I’ll See You In My Dreams cracked the Billboard top 20 it seemed Dan Huff and his vehicle for soft metal superstardom were set for take off but Giant’s time at the top was all  too brief.
