Sheryl Crow backstory
Revered and respected by a new breed of singer songwriter, Americana queen Sheryl Crow continues to break new ground and set the standards more than 30 years into a critically acclaimed career.
Phoebe Bridgers, H.E.R, Haim, Maren Morris, Lorde, Sasami, Best Coast and Brandi Carlile are just a handful of the artists who claim to owe a debt of inspiration to the nine-time Grammy winner.
And the storied voice behind All I Wanna Do shows no sign of slowing down any time soon with studio album number 12 dropping in October.
Crow helped define the third wave of feminism and was finally inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2023.
The Missouri native released her 11th long player — Evolution — the following year and has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.
In Sheryl Crow’s own words
“I do not take freedom lightly because our freedom has been paid for in the lives of others throughout history.
“And that is something I wish we could all remember when we are interacting with each other.
“Our dialogue and ability to disagree must reflect what has been paid for in the blood, sweat, and tears of those who fought for every man and woman to be created equal and to enjoy the rights that our constitution has allowed each of us.”
The verdict on Freedom Bus
Crow’s career-defining quality control means there’s no single word wasted on the first track culled from forthcoming album Pick You Up.
And as soon as you jump aboard the Freedom Bus it’s clear that this affecting song charts a familiar journey of protest, pleading and passion from a generational talent.
‘Let’s take a lesson from the family tree/We share this land, but we don’t all agree,’ implores Crow as she swiftly hits her socio-political stride.
Of course the pin-sharp observational approach and thought-provoking narrative is complemented by exquisite musicianship.
Meanwhile, understanding trumps (with a small ‘T’) division as Freedom Bus eats up the miles with reassuring ease.
An uplifting anthem for the ages is best enjoyed in video form — check out the smiling faces on stage and off as Crow soars.
The wheels might be coming off Stateside but the Freedom Bus proves all is not lost… just yet.
