Turbo Shaka Moto backstory

Newcastle’s Turbo Shaka Moto may be new, but North Easterners (and desert scene dwellers) will recognise some familiar faces in their ranks.

Guitarist/vocalist John Davies is usually seen fronting stoner rockers Dunes, while bassist/vocalist Baz Stenfalt served time in black metallers Decrepit Monolith, and drummer Dom Agnew powers Tyneside grunge punks Hijack Mantis.

Their mission? To knock out “a ferocious mix of 70s punk, 80s metal and 90s Scandinavian rock ‘n’ roll with needles firmly in the red and amps on 11”.

First single Head Off – which was recorded and mixed by Dunes’ Nikky Watson – is taken from their upcoming debut album Heavy Fettle.

“The track is the perfect introduction to the band and has all the elements of the soon to be released debut album – Godzilla sized riffs, high energy punk rock, and more hooks than a fisherman’s shed.”

The verdict on Head Off

This is high voltage rock n’ roll.

Fun, fearless and fired-up, Head Off is reminiscent of Brit rock’s 90s glory days, where The Wildhearts and Therapy? vied for space on Kerrang!’s cover, and rampaged across the nation.

Indeed, not a second is wasted in this urgent first foray. Every chord, riff and gang shout counts.

And in a nod to their heroes Turbonegro (Davies and Stenfalt even played a charity show as the Swedes), the song drips with sweaty Scandipunk.

It’s one hell of an opening statement.
