Mike Ross backstory

Loved and respected by fans and fellow musos alike, Mike Ross is the scene leader when it comes to raucous, blues-soaked rock and soul.

The prolific singer songwriter continues to collaborate with many of the brightest lights in the UK’s emerging NWOCR scene.

And his work with Elles Bailey, Jack J Hutchinson, Troy Redfern and more showcases a multi-talented artist never afraid to push the boundaries.

Ross is an incessantly touring force of nature who’s played live music on every continent and covered most of Europe.

Spindrift and 2016’s textured follow-up Jenny’s Place paved the way for the career-cementing Clovis Limit series.

The Clovis Limit Pt.1, The Clovis Limit Pt.2 and The Clovis Limit Tennessee Transition oozed blues rock class and Americana-fuelled storytelling.

But Ross’ first record in two years — Third Eye Open — promises to top the lot if lead single The Preacher’s an early marker.

In Mike Ross’ own words

The Preacher is a three-and-a-half minute rockers’ revival meeting.

“It comes fully loaded with big choruses, handclaps, foot-stomps and a face-melter of a guitar solo!

“The new album Third Eye Open is a real bone-shaker of a record.

“There’s definitely been a feeling of coming ‘full circle’ this time around — bringing all of my influences and material bang up to date.

“And the final 12 track behemoth of a record is hands down the biggest, fattest, nastiest, chunkiest thing I’ve ever done!

“The main riffs for songs like The Preacher were things I’d had for years but hadn’t ever found a use for.”

The verdict on The Preacher

Like The Black Crowes on steroids, The Preacher packs a powerful blues rock punch.

Mike Ross is gaining quite the reputation for knocking anthemic earworms out of the park.

And this Southern rock-wrapped riffathon is another top-drawer triumph.

Ross’ ability to bounce gravel-toned vocals off a red-hot fretboard has paid dividends in the past.

And on The Preacher he repeats the trick — with help from old buddy Jack J Hutchinson.

The Hutch has just launched his latest album crowdfunder and duly smashed the target in a couple of days.

But he still found time to add booming backing vocals to this bellowing tune.

And it’s a NWOCR match made in heaven.

The Preacher proves Ross is still the blues rock boss. It’s good to have him back.
