The Karma Effect backstory
A product of the pandemic and on a mission to reinvent the blues rock wheel, The Karma Effect continue to lead the NWOCR charge.
The band’s 2022 self-titled album teased the Londoners’ huge potential and it’s little wonder we tipped Henry Gottelier and co. for big things a couple of years later.
By then they’d already brought the house down at Call Of The Wild festival.
And with 2024’s The Promised Land those Karma Effect boys were in red hot, swaggering form — charging all the way into the UK Top 20!
We caught the band on the opening night of The Promised Land headline tour and it was a gig for the ages.
But 2025 was all about readying album number three.
And it looks like time well spent: various vinyl pre-orders for the hotly anticipated Cruel Intentions have already sold out.
We’ll be reporting live from The Gibson Garage later this week as Henry and the boys showcase that May release with an intimate acoustic set in the heart of London.
Watch this space…
In Henry Gottelier’s own words
“Dangerous Love is about doing things you shouldn’t do but you can’t stop yourself doing.
“It’s about passion overtaking your senses.
“And it’s about your mind getting away from you.”
The verdict on Dangerous Love
Is The Karma Effect’s charismatic leader Gottellier taking his cue from Rushonrock-approved frontman Jay Buchanan?
Because Dangerous Love’s devilish vocal wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Rival Sons record.
It’s that good.
Soaked in heavy blues, dripping with classic rock authenticity and boasting a breakneck pace that’s simply addictive, the second single from Cruel Intentions is a cracker.
Evoking peak 80s Aerosmith — with a gloriously honky tonk horn section to boot — Dangerous Love is a hazard to the senses.
And it stands toe to toe with wizarding lead single Waiting On A Miracle.
Prepare to be dazzled by The Karma Effect’s twin axe attack as Gottelier and Robbie Blake let rip.
But don’t sleep on Alan Taylor’s drums — there’s a reason a pin sharp Romesh Dodangoda mix captures the band’s rhythm king at his furious best.
Dangerous Love’s no risky move. This is The full Karma Effect and it’s fabulous stuff.
What’s next for The Karma Effect
A slew of vinyl variants and bulging fan bundles celebrate the release of Cruel Intentions via Earache on May 15.
The Karma Effect plays a short acoustic set at The Gibson Garage on Thursday (February 5).
And the band plays Carlisle’s Rockmantic Weekender two days later.
