The All-Consuming Work Of The Soul’s Foreclosing

Artist

Terzij de Horde

Terzij de Horde backstory

‘Terzij de Horde’ is old Dutch for ‘set apart from the horde’ – and it’s an apt monicker for this Utrech quintet. Like Underdark and Calligram, they inhabit that hazy space between black metal, hardcore and post metal. And like those bands, they have nailed a sound that us uniquely theirs.

Terzij de Horde’s second album, In One Of These, I Am Your Enemy, took its place in our Best Black Metal Albums of 2022 for its inventive, angular take on BM. We called it “visceral and engrossing”. And it seems there’s plenty more where that came from, as Our Breath Is Not Ours Alone, the band’s first album on Church Road Records, is just around the corner.

This track is the second single to be released from the album, following The Shadows Of Prefiguration’s appearance last month.

In vocalist Joost Vervoort’s own words

“Most of the world’s creative energy is constantly expended to keep dominant and destructive systems alive.

“The injustices of the world are not simply there as inert realities, they require constant complicity from all of us.

The All-Consuming Work of the Soul’s Foreclosing deals with this gigantic outpouring of effort to close off the soul and instrumentalize life.”

The verdict on The All-Consuming Work of the Soul’s Foreclosing

Blurring the lines between hardcore and black metal is nothing new for Terzij de Horde, but even by their standards this is absolutely, undeniably intense.

To face The All-Consuming Work of the Soul’s Foreclosing is to be plunged, screaming, into a furnace. Richard Japenga’s unrelenting blasts fan the flames, while Demian Snel and Jelle Agema unleash streams of white hot riffery and Vervoort delivers a performance akin to the great Tomas ‘Tompa’ Lindberg.

It’s up their with the band’s best work – and we fully expect more gems to emerge from Our Breath Is Not Ours Alone.

What’s next for Terzij de Horde?

Our Breath Is Not Ours Alone will hit on October 10 – and they’ll be celebrating its release with a live show on the same day at Nijmegen’s Soulcrusher Festival.
