Chantel McGregor backstory

Bradford-born Chantel McGregor first picked up a guitar than 30 years ago and one of the British blues scene’s star attractions rarely disappoints.

Rumour has it that new long player The Healing represents a rockier direction for the multi-talented singer songwriter.

But McGregor’s made her name on the back of groove-laden, rootsy blues.

In 2011 she scooped the Young Artist of the Year award at the British Blues Awards and the following year clinched Best Female Vocalist.

By 2013 she was celebrating double success at the same event — winning Guitarist of the Year and retaining her Best Female Vocalist crown.

Dazzling debut album Like No Other and follow-up Lose Control were both produced by Livingstone Brown.

And those back-to-back records reinforced McGregor’s reputation for delivering gold plated, heartfelt blues.

The pandemic-inspired Shed Sessions compilations kept the creative pot boiling but The Healing looks set to redefine a generational talent.

In Chantel McGregor’s own words

“At its core, Stand On My Own is about overcoming the weight of the anxieties and fears that can hold us back in life.

“It delves into the struggle of overthinking, battling internal voices and dealing with the consequences of past mistakes or regrets.

“It reflects a state of vulnerability and turmoil, where the world feels unstable and the mind is consumed by doubts.

“The song stands as a declaration of strength and self-reliance. It speaks to the realisation that we don’t need miracles or external saviours to thrive

“Instead, the power lies within us to face life’s challenges with resilience.

Stand On My Own celebrates the liberating moment when fear no longer dictates our choices, and we choose to live boldly and authentically.”

The verdict on Stand On My Own

If thought-provoking lyrics demand the keenest of attention, then it’s the flawless fret work that ensures Stand On My Own stands out from the crowd.

McGregor’s full focus approach to some seriously affecting songwriting reaps rich rewards as this second single from new album The Healing seals the deal.

Maybe the vocals are a touch too prominent within a meaty mix — a query for co-producer Oli Brown, perhaps?

But it must be damn difficult to downplay one of the domestic blues scene’s most iconic voices.

McGregor has rarely sounded better as she belts out a robust rock song rich in self-reflection and reassuring optimism.

Stand On My Own is a statement song from a standout performer.

McGregor is clearly ready to make her move.
