Gurt backstory
With song titles like Rolling Stoned and Gardening With Cthulu, it’s fair to say Gurt don’t take themselves too seriously. London’s ‘party doom’ butt shakers like having fun with Iommian riffs and stoner-grooves, and since 2010 they’ve been lighting up the heavy underground, and making a nuisance on themselves at Bloodstock, Desertfest et al.
Back in January, Gurt entered Monolith Studios in London to record the follow up to 2019’s Bongs of Praise album, and they’re preparing to unleash the result – Satan Etc – in just a few week’s time.
Appetite for Construction is the second single to be released from the new record, following Knife Fever’s unveiling back in April.
In Gurt’s own words
“It’s no secret that Gareth (Kelly, Gurt vocalist) is a fan of a famous little building brick and this song started life as an ode to his favourite hobby, what it ended up as was a twisted tale of an unknown evil, building its twisted world around an unsuspecting people, a legacy of pain!”
The verdict on Appetite for Construction
Maybe it’s something in the water… like untreated sewage and E.Coli. Perhaps it’s the perennially glum weather. Or it could be the miserable national mood. Whatever the reason, the UK is sludge central at the moment. And Gurt have their feet planted firmly in the mire.
The boys have always excelled at big, fat, juicy riffs, but on Appetite for Construction, they sound leaner and meaner. There’s even a whiff of UK OGs Iron Monkey around this monstrous track and a hell of a lot of attitude (if you can have an attitude about Lego).
The mid-paced sections are anchored by particularly filthy hooks, the slow and low passages sizzle with menace, and the whole thing is just plain ugly.
Satan Etc could be devilishly good if Appetite for Construction is anything to go by.
What’s next for Gurt?
