Carly Pearce backstory

When Carly Pearce left home aged just 16 to take a job at Dollywood, only those closest to the Kentucky native imagined the 33-year-old version forging such a successful career as one of country music’s foremost singer songwriters.

But the Grammy Award winning star has rarely taken a wrong turn on the road towards her fourth full-length album, hummingbird.

And it all started with delicious Every Little Thing — that debut album’s history-making title track laying the foundation for critical acclaim and commercial success.

Come 2020 — and the release of her self-titled sophomore effort — Pearce had hooked up with Lee Brice on ACM Single of the Year, I Hope You’re Happy Now.

The following year’s 29: Written In Stone maintained a happy knack for fusing quality with quantity as the Grand Ole Opry member excelled herself.

Never Wanted To Be That Girl, with Ashley McBryde, and What He Didn’t Do topped the Country Radio charts.

The former earned Pearce and McBryde a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance — the first female pairing to win the category.

June drop hummingbird has already revealed hit singles we don’t fight anymore (featuring Chris Stapleton) and country music made me do it.

In Carly Pearce’s own words

“When I wrote this song, I knew I wanted this to be the title of the album.

“This song plays on my bluegrass roots but also lyrically tells the story of the journey I am on of finding love.

“This is the most unapologetically ‘Carly’ song I’ve ever written.

“I have lived a lot of life in the last few years.

“Entering a new decade has brought a lot of maturity, growth, heartache and healing.

“I am still a work in progress but the songs on the new album represent my honesty, playfulness, and openness to keep growing.”

The verdict on hummingbird

Helmed in classic country and driven by Pearce’s stadium-ready pipes, hummingbird is a magical, mesmerising piece of work.

Rootsy strings and a haunting vocal make for one of the most beautiful, soul-searching songs of 2024.

And such is its nuanced, affecting vibe, the title track from this summer’s must-listen set may even eclipse Chris Stapleton collab we don’t fight anymore and the flawless foot stomper country music made me do it.

Pearce trailed hummingbird by describing it as ‘the most unapologetically ‘Carly’ song I’ve ever written’. It could well be.

In fact, right now, it’s difficult to imagine any song coming close to matching this heart-stopping peak Pearce ballad.

As the embodiment of one of country music’s most talented performers it’s truly special.
