Godthrymm backstory

Emerging from Halifax in 2017, Godthrymm have spread their own brand of epic doom over three EPs, a clutch of singles, and 2020’s Reflections album.

And the band of Hamish Glencross, Catherine Glencross, Bob Crolla and Shaun Taylor-Steel boast one hell of a CV: My Dying Bride, Vallenfyre, Solstice and Anathema are on their collective resume.

Work began on their forthcoming new album, Distortions, in the first pandemic lockdown.

Devils is the second single to be taken from that record, following the release of Echoes in June.

In vocalist/guitarist Hamish Glencross’ own words

“Yes, we’ve got a video! This gives the opportunity to showcase a riff heavy stomper from the new album, with the live lineup heads down in the studio where we recorded Distortions.

“Whereas Echoes finds us in a more melancholic, sombre mood, this rocks in a heavier metal fashion. Look, listen and loud!”

The verdict on Devils

Given Godthrymm’s illustrious pedigree, it’s perhaps no surprise that Devils is a monument to misery: the Peaceville Three’s spectral presence certainly looms large.

Devils’ opening riff is seemingly woven from the very fabric of Yorkshire gloom.

Godthrymm rhythm section build and surge.

And Hamish and Catherine’s rich vocals bring even greater depth to a stunning piece of work.

Executed with real finesse, Devils is underlined by the songwriting suss that comes from decades on doom’s frontlines.

Distortions could be something very special indeed…

What’s next for Godthrymm?

Distortions – which was recorded at The Nave Studio in Leeds and Sasquatch Music Studio in Huddersfield – is set for release on August 18 via Profound Lore Records. It’s the second part of Hamish Glencross’ Visions trilogy: a third part, Projections, is already in the works.
