Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse backstory
Spawned from riotous alt rock outliers Well Hung Heart, this most colourful of collabs has just dropped the rootsy and diverse album Good Times End Times.
If Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse represents the creative growth of founders Greta Valenti and Robin Davey, then their new band’s no less exciting.
In fact, current single Fill Me Up is a feisty little number that wouldn’t sound out of place pacing a Well Hung Heart show.
Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse might be billed as a bold roots rock diversion but Valenti and Davey retain their energetic underbelly.
The former brings her Louisiana cool to the fore while the latter’s blues background colours the very best of Good Times End Times.
Debut Love And Murder hinted at the musical maelstrom to come as it crashed a series of 2019’s Best Of Lists.
Landing at number 13 in Classic Rock Magazine’s Top 50 Albums Of The Year, its immersive blues won warm praise and raised expectations.
Three years down the line and Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse have added Emma Jonson and Stephen Mildwater to the mix.
And the kaleidoscopic quintet — completed by drummer Mark Barrett — are on course to become one of the biggest noises of 2022.
In singer Greta Valenti’s own words:
“The collection of songs from this entire album was born out of a time of darkness, isolation, depression, frustration and pure survival over the past two years.
“As nothing lasts forever, I knew there would be a release from this state at some point.
“I wanted Fill Me Up to be the keeper of that energy.
“It’s an explosion, a release and a true celebration of life and the human connection we all need.”
The verdict on Fill Me Up
A red-hot riff lays the foundation for a typically furious Valenti vocal as Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse let rip on Good Times End Times’ infectious lead single.
There’s so much going on here it’s simply impossible to enjoy this feast for the senses in one take.
In fact, you’ll find you can never have your fill of Fill Me Up.
Jonson’s thrill-to-the-touch tinkling teases another layer out of this tantalising track.
And rhythm king Barrett drives one of the songs of the year with beautifully understated control.
Valenti envisaged Fill Me Up as an adrenaline-fuelled antidote to the pandemic era.
It does the job…and then some.
Fill Me Up is overflowing with optimism, zeal and vivid imagination.
Its blues rock, done right.
