Ian Astbury has insisted Sage Gateshead will never have seen anything quite like the party planned for Tyneside later this month.

In celebration of landmark album Sonic Temple – 30-years-old last month – The Cult are playing two UK shows in May.

And after breaking out their trademark riffs at the 2019 Bearded Theory Festival, the band roll up at Sage Gateshead on May 26.

“We’ve never thrown a party like this before,” said Astbury. “We want to celebrate the band’s DNA and especially the album Sonic Temple as this year Beggars Banquet are planning a substantial reissue project.”

The Sonic Temple celebrations began in earnest last week with an opening night extravaganza at Houston’s House Of Blues.

US festival dates include Welcome To Rockville, Epicenter, Sonic Temple, Chicago Open Air, and Kaaboo.

But no further UK dates have been announced with tickets for the band’s two British shows selling out fast.

Sonic Temple peaked at number three in the UK album charts and broke the top 10 on the Billboard charts.

Singles Fire Woman, Sun King and Edie (Ciao Baby) all cracked the top 40 and the Bob Rock produced record reinforced The Cult’s commercial hard rock direction.
