@ LYH Newcastle, January 9 2009

Although not a new concept, I am no less intrigued by a new rock night in Newcastle. With usual haunts doing the same old song and dance what is there to lose by checking out Rock@lyh’s free entry night?

Granted anyone can roll up and play a selection of rock but what many fail to do is to play what the crowd want and keep the pace interesting. This might just be the exception to the rule.

The Head Of Steam’s newly acquired LYH is a bar based in the heart of Newcastle’s busy city centre, just off Northumberland Street. My trusty cowboy boots do their best to battle the black ice leading to the Toon’s new home for rock. Opening the door to what was previously called Shamrox, the sounds of AC/DC greeted me as I kicked the snow from my boots. I got the feeling I was going to have some fun.

Familiar faces welcome the new, juxtaposed with a common love for rock n roll. From classic to modern, the atmosphere at LYH is infectious. The warm, high spirited party vibe seems to know nothing of the Siberian cold outside as the 100-plus crowd proves. People seem to approve of the blend between Aerosmith, Queens Of The Stone Age, Pantera to Whitesnake, Rammstein & even local heirs to the Quireboys’ throne – Fables Last Stand.

Setting the scene for Newcastle’s new rock night are long-time rock djs Mel and former Suzie’s spinner Graeme J who seem to have a wealth and abundance of arena rock.

It’s like The Stones meeting Motorhead at a party Motley Crue threw for Alice Cooper, although the newly refurbished LYH doesn’t look like a rock bar (yet) – it has a saloon feel to it. Three leather blocked booths, leather settees, a downstairs and upstairs bar and a pool room make for a heady mix. To boot there is a large projection screen as well as a load of plasma screens scattered about playing rock video classics. The upstairs rock night is accentuated by red neon lights that surround the ceiling.

With enough support I think Rock@lyh could be a great regular night.
