The Georgia Satellites – Another Chance (Baird) b/w Open All Night (Baird) 1989
Still best known for their Billboard Hot 100 top two smash Keep Your Hands To Yourself, the band fronted by singer songwriter Dan Baird went on to release two of the best records of the late 80s.
Open All Night and In The Land Of Salvation And Sin are classic rock and roll albums soaked in Southern sauce and Jack Daniels. This track, from the latter, was later released as a four track EP in the US but it hit stores as a humble seven incher here in the UK.
A slow-paced ballad by the Satellites’ standards, it nevertheless showcases Baird’s skills as a supreme performer blessed with an ear for the perfect hook and lyrics for the masses. Backed with the brilliant Open All Night – the title track from the band’s best record by far – it’s well worth its place on The Vinyl Countdown.
Baird continues to tour relentlessly in 2009 and often crops up on bills alongside label mates the Quireboys. And while he’s still penning great rock and roll tunes, the Satellites’ standards remain a key element in his set list.
In this age of late 80s reunions it’s difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. But if you ever get the opportunity to see the Satts then take it. And if you weren’t convinced first time around then give them Another Chance. Go on.
