Sweet Electric backstory

When — in the summer of 2022 — Rushonrock received news that an Aussie-fronted, German-based band of long-haired brothers was ready to rewrite rock and roll history our interest was well and truly piqued.

Massive’s livewire Brad Marr backed by a team of crack Cologne-based party starters?

It sounded too good to be true.

Sweet Electric‘s debut single Heir To The Throne set the tone and immediately rocketed to the top of our summer playlist.

But could these cool cats with various silly hats cut it live?

Of course they fucking could.

Twelve months on and Sweet Electric slayed Call Of The Wild with a setlist for the ages — Marr’s showmanship and his buddies’ musicianship made Lincoln sit up and take notice.

November 2024 saw debut album The Monsters Are Rising make waves on the NWOCR scene.

We caught up with the boys in Newcastle a couple of weeks after its release and Sweet Electric were on fire.

Countless touring across Europe and the UK — including dates with Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, Smith/Kotzen, The Lazys and Hayseed Dixie — helped the band hone their unique craft.

And festival showstoppers at Stonedead, Call of the Wild, Hard Rock Hell, Dong Open Air, Sinner Rock, Zeigelei festival, Bully on Rocks, Bouge Ton Cube and Showbike Aquitaine bolstered a reputation for blistering live rock.

In frontman Brad Marr’s own words

Mexico is about wearing some cheap sunglasses and doing something outside your comfort zone, especially when life gets you stuck in a rut.

“The song is completely different from the songs on our first album, because the first album was the first 10 songs we ever wrote.

“We’ve spent a lot of time cramped in a van since then. We’ve played some amazing gigs, and we have played some terrible gigs.

“We have evolved and the end result is something we are really happy with.”

The verdict on Mexico

It seems there are two ways to look at Mexico.

The Donald Trump approach where you build a wall and belittle your next door neighbours at every opportunity.

Or the Brad Marr approach where you celebrate every aspect of a proud nation’s culture within a video that’s bursting at the seams with sombreros, tacos and knitted ponchos.

Now our favourite Aussie frontman’s no fan of football.

But if Javier Aguirre’s Mexicans are still searching for an official song ahead of this summer’s World Cup then Sweet Electric’s DMs are wide open.

Of course, nothing’s quite what it seems where this crazy band of rock and roll hombres is concerned.

And Mexico is less a love letter to the home of Salma Hayek, Guillermo del Torro and Canelo Álvarez and more a deep dive into Marr’s remarkable mind.

This is a song about insecurity and indecision, running away and running scared.

But thanks to Marr cavorting across your screen in a pair of tight denim shorts and a false moustache (look away now if thrusting on a chair isn’t your thing), a heavy dose of humour helps cut through the serious stuff.

Like a double shot of Fortaleza with a slice of lime — Mexico is the livener you’re looking for to quench this summer’s thirst for good time rock and roll.

What’s next for Sweet Electric

Brad and the boys release new album Something Something Disco in September.

Following select summer dates the German-based combo hit the road on two separate tours this autumn — with Aussie party starters The Lazys and Hayseed Dixie.
