Liam Fender backstory
Hailing from the creative hotbed that is North Tyneside, indie soul man Liam Fender has been honing his craft as a seriously compelling singer songwriter for more than 15 years.
His self-styled ‘post-industrial romance’ has drawn comparisons to Richard Hawley, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and John Martyn.
And his captivating storytelling provides a snapshot of a region revelling in its new-found reputation as a breeding ground for the very best in ambitious musicianship.
2023’s Love Will EP, the following year’s Man Down EP and new single Here We Are represent Fender’s most productive spell yet.
He became the face of a town celebrating its 800th anniversary in 2025 — the proud North Shields native fronting the critically acclaimed 800 Years: Here We Are documentary.
But in typical fashion, industry outlier Fender’s stepping away from the stage with his stock never higher. Watch this space.
In Liam Fender’s own words
“This one’s for everyone who’s been part of the journey so far.
“It’s about finding light in the moments before you disappear into the sun.
“North Shields will always be home — its people and its spirit run through everything I do.
“After the 800 Years: Here We Are documentary, I felt like this song was the right way to say thank you. It’s not a goodbye but more of a see you later.”
The verdict on Here We Are
Has Liam Fender finally unearthed his inner classic rocker?
Here We Are is passionate, powerful and perfectly pitched… showcasing a gritty guitar riff that’ll have fans of Rival Sons purring.
Fender’s trademark indie soul plays second fiddle to some seriously heavy blues as Here We Are hits home hard.
Lyrically on point and sonically sharp, it’s as optimistic as it’s ambitious.
And it feels like Fender’s making a weighty statement before wrapping up the latest chapter in a colourful story.
Paired with an illuminating film — featuring drone-shot footage of the mouth of the Tyne — Here We Are points to a hopeful future.
Where Fender fits into that future remains to be seen.
