FM backstory

Formed in the 80s by the Overland brothers, FM are one of the UK’s most revered melodic rock trailblazers.

Debut album Indiscreet (1986) and follow-ups Tough It Out and Takin’ It To The Streets could and should have established the classy Londoners as the band to beat.

But after failing to break the US and running headlong into grunge, it looked like FM’s story might have been one of missed opportunities and what might have been.

A 15-year hiatus ended in 2010 with the release of majestic long player Metropolis.

And a remarkable run of 10 albums in 15 years — including a 30th anniversary re-release of Indiscreet— firmly re-established FM as the original masters of the AOR craft.

New album Brotherhood was recorded by the band’s longstanding line-up of founding members Steve Overland, Merv Goldsworthy and Pete Jupp — alongside keyboard player Jem Davis and guitarist Jim Kirkpatrick.

In frontman Steve Overland’s own words

Living On The Run is a great hard-hitting, melodic, fast-moving track.

“The song is about what the title suggests — a real Bonnie and Clyde storyline.

“There’s a very instant, big chorus, which makes for a good first single choice from Brotherhood.

“I am proud of the new album. It’s another milestone, as it’s FM’s 15th album.”

The verdict on Living On The Run

Few bands make melodic rock like FM.

And Living On The Run’s the sound of a band living in the moment as Steve Overland continues to mine a rich vein of AOR gold.

If FM narrowly missed their chance at global stardom 40 years ago then a mission to make up for lost time — and lost opportunities — is gathering pace.

The temperature’s rising on what’s proving to be a long, hot Indian summer and Living On The Run’s another perfectly styled 80s throwback anthem.

Its addictive hook and Overland’s pitch perfect vocal bode well for what brand new album Brotherhood has to offer.

Living On The Run proves FM don’t need to live off the past.
