One More Satellite backstory
Dean DeLeo and Pete Shoulder are no strangers to boundary stretching Transatlantic collaborations but One More Satellite could be their best yet.
The Stone Temple Pilots six stringer and ex-Winterville/The Union/Silverthorn/Sloper singer songwriter have evolved into an intuitive partnership.
And a creative match made in heaven has always oozed potential.
DeLeo and Shoulder worked together on Robert DeLeo’s Lessons Learned album in 2022 and joined forces on a Stone Temple Pilots/Trip The Witch project.
But Paper Over The Cracks — from One More Satellite’s self-titled debut — is the first evidence of a joint venture that looks set to soar.
County Durham’s Shoulder forged a reputation as one of the UK’s foremost blues rockers during the noughties and hooked up with Thunder’s Luke Morley to front The Union in 2009.
At the same time the DeLeo brothers reformed Stone Temple Pilots following a five-year hiatus and the band’s sixth album dropped in 2010.
Shoulder divides his time between the UK and the US and has been working on a new project with Quireboys’ frontman Spike since Christmas.
In Pete Shoulder’s own words
“I was excited to hear the new music Dean wanted to collaborate on.
“We’ve worked together in the past and it’s always been an absolute pleasure making music with him.
“The stuff he comes up with is so interesting, with so many beautiful, unexpected, twists and turns.
“It’s very inspiring to write to and pushes me into realms that I would never usually think of exploring.
“I’m very proud of the album we’ve made.”
The verdict on Paper Over The Cracks
Fusing DeLeo’s post-grunge riffs with the reassuring warmth of Shoulder’s rootsy vocals works an absolute treat.
And it’s exciting to learn that the pair joined forces on eight of One More Satellite’s 10 studio tracks.
Debut single Paper Over The Cracks leans on a deeply ironic title given that the musicianship here is flawless.
And yet perfect doesn’t always mean polished: there’s a raw and often stripped back feel to a song showcasing the technical and the instinctive in equal measure.
Neither DeLeo nor Shoulder ever dominates — Paper Over The Cracks benefits from a subtle mix that affords both musicians an equal opportunity to shine.
As a first taste of what’s to come, One More Satellite has delivered music that communicates with the soul and questions the norm.
Paper Over The Cracks conceals nothing. DeLeo and Shoulder have shown their hand and confirmed their class.
