As The World Dies backstory
Led by Memoriam guitarist Scott Fairfax and featuring former Ashen Crown vocalist Jay Price, As The World Dies have emerged as a new force in UK death metal.
The Birmingham band bagged a Rushonrock Record of the Week for their sensational debut, Agonist – one of our Death Metal Albums of 2022 – and next month, they’ll be hitting us again with its follow-up, Nebula.
According to Fairfax, whose talents of also graced Massacre and Benediction, the album is “heavier, darker, and more profound” than anything they’d done before. “We pushed our musical boundaries to create something both brutal and thought-provoking,” he says.
In Scott Fairfax’s own words
“Under A Dying Sky is a defining moment for us. It captures the essence of what As The World Dies is all about – an intense, cinematic experience wrapped in brutal, crushing death metal.
“We wanted to push the limits even further, and this track is just a taste of what’s coming with Nebula.”
The verdict on Under A Dying Sky
Under A Dying Sky’s claustrophobic atmosphere is almost suffocating. This track is As The World Dies at their doomiest, with Fairfax and fellow guitarist Darren Mcgillivray taking us back to Gothic-era Paradise Lost, and drawing a cloak of despair across a blackened world.
That said, nearly two minutes in, you’re hit with a typically punishing ATWD riff – a sharp reminder of the band’s sonic muscularity.
Combine this with previous single Dark Oblivion, and there’s a sense that Nebula could be a UKDM masterpiece.
We can’t wait.
What’s next for As The World Dies?
Nebula is set for release on March 21 via Reaper Entertainment.
