Virginmarys backstory
When Macclesfield’s finest shifted 9,000-plus copies of 2013’s King Of Conflict in the US alone, the future looked bright for Virginmarys.
A Download debut in 2010 got the critics talking and the band worked with both Toby Jepson and Mike Fraser in the same year to push out mini album Cast The First Stone.
Named Best Breakthrough Act at the 2013 Classic Rock Awards, the alt rockers maintained their upwardly mobile momentum.
But 2016’s Gil Norton-produced Divides didn’t do the band justice and a rebuilding process began.
Independently released Northern Sun Sessions gained widespread critical acclaim but post-Covid the band’s focus shifted again.
Upcoming album The House Beyond The Fires showcases the remodelled Virginmarys as a two-piece with Ally Dickaty and Danny Dolan leading the charge.
In frontman Ally Dickaty’s own words
“This is a track for the uninspired, for the unheard, those who crave truth and all that’s real.
“Those struggling day to day to make ends meet, yet still have love in their hearts to fight the good fight.
“Those who see the system is broken and choose not to punch down.
“We’re really proud of this track and musically we haven’t released a song like this before
“It’s a further glimpse into an album we consider our best work to date.”
The verdict on There Ain’t No Future
Bristling with intent and driven by a sparky alt rock riff, there’s never been a more misleading song title.
Virginmarys might be fast approaching 20 years at the coal face of an unforgiving music business but the band’s passion — and potential — remains undiminished.
And frontman Ally Dickaty is in devilish form as he proves beyond doubt that Virginmarys do have a future — and an exciting one at that.
There Ain’t No Future is a lesson in the old adage ‘less is more’ as Dickaty and Danny Dolan power through a high octane tune unassisted.
And the focus naturally shifts from one band mate to the other — Dolan reinforcing his reputation as one of the NWOCR’s most destructive drummers.
Virginmarys have long been the nearly men of British rock.
There Ain’t No Future suggests the duo’s time is now.
