Byker Grave Festival has announced three new acts for its 10th edition event this November.

Penance Stare, Endless Swarm and Blasphemer will be joining Hellripper, Implore and Kurokuma at the festival, which will take place at Anarchy Brewery on November 11.

Newcastle post-black metal duo Penance Stare have built up a strong North East following since forming in 2017. No strangers to the UK’s underground scene, they’ve shared stages with the likes of Dawn Ray’d, Lump Hammer and Plague Rider, and last year released a split album with London death metallers Atvm.

Edinburgh quartet Endless Swarm (pictured), meanwhile, will be bringing their blistering brand of powerviolence to Byker Grave Festival.

And it will be a long-awaited Tyneside return for Dewsbury death metal veterans Blasphemer. The band made an instant impression on the UK scene with their 1992 demo, before morphing into Peaceville-signed gloom act Dominion in the mid-90s.

Re-emerging as Blasphemer in 2014, they’ve since recorded two albums – Blasphemer and Lust Of The Goat – and last played Newcastle in 2019.

Byker Grave Festival was founded in 2013 as a ‘rescue gig’ in response to the cancellation of Northern Darkness Festival, a death and black metal festival which had been due to take place at Newcastle University.

It has since been hosted at a number of independent venues across Newcastle, and has featured acts from across the metal and grind scenes, including Conan, Conjurer, Green Lung, PLF and Live Burial.

More bands are set to be announced for the 2023 festival.
