Paper Hands backstory

Paper Hands are Jordan Campbell (lead vocals) and Billy Taylor (drums/ guitar/ bass).

The pair have been lifelong friends since meeting in the early 90s at the tender ages of three and four.

They met as next-door neighbours when their parents were in the Royal Air Force at Leeming in North Yorkshire.

Campbell and Taylor forged a bond from day one and remain best friends.

Musically, this bond had remained unexplored until the whole world changed and lockdowns and social distancing forced a new normal.

Ideas, sounds and the beginnings of songs flew back and forth before the pair realised they’d hit on something special.

Cue Ayr-based Campbell and Birmingham-based Taylor putting their Paper Hands plan into action.

In Billy Taylor’s own words:

Early Warning started life as nothing but a voice note but became the catalyst for us creating Paper Hands.

“As a song it’s a pure and honest exploration of styles bonded together by a signature rawness we aim to preserve.

“The way we write lyrics comes more from feeling than direct story telling or anecdotal referencing and Early Warning is not exempt from this.

“This means that, even to us, the song’s meaning can change from time to time depending on how you listen to it.

“It also leaves it open to interpretation from whoever choses to listen to it.”

The verdict on Early Warning

Shots fired from Paper Hands as Early Warning signals the band’s striking intent.

Beguiling melodies combine Biffy-esque brawn with subtle electro beats as Campbell and Taylor lay everything on the line.

There’s a lockdown-fuelled sense of frustration driving Early Warning’s brooding soundscape.

And yet this is a song for the future.

Campbell opens up with the powerful line ‘I have played pretend for 19 years’.

But Early Warning’s no make-believe.

Paper Hands is the real deal. Don’t pretend otherwise.

What’s next for Paper Hands

Campbell and Taylor have already put the finishing touches to more new music.

A follow-up to Early Warning is slated for later this year.
