Gozer backstory

Born from the ashes of post-metal act Archelon, Gozer make the kind of crushing, expansive sludge that shifts tectonic plates.

The Sheffield trio of TJ Fairfax, Kieran Sockett and Craig Paul, “put Archelon to bed” in 2020 and emerged under their new moniker last year.

By the end of 2021, they’d debuted as Gozer at Sheffield’s Record Junkee with Underdark and Vow, played shows with Ba’al and Calligram, unleashed their first single, Crown Eater, and recorded their debut full-length – An Endless Static – which is set to be released in June.

Fading Light is the first track to be unveiled from the album.

In drummer TJ Fairfax’s own words

“When we started writing this album Fading Light was one of the first tracks we wrote and it just fell into place musically.

“Once Tom Wight (Hundred Year Old Man) added French horn and synth it just elevated the song’s sense of dread.

“Writing the lyrics for Fading Light I drew a lot from my battles with my own mental health, not realising how cathartic it really was going to be.

“But having the ability to focus some of my anger, sadness and loss really helped me grow and let go of a lot of things.

“It’s okay to not be okay.”

The verdict on Fading Light

An immersive, visceral piece of work, Fading Light is a taste of just what Gozer are capable of.

The deep tones of Neurosis, the cinematic aura of Cult Of Luna and more than a pinch of Yorkshire grit combine for nine stunning minutes, as the track builds towards its jaw-dropping climax.

It’s certainly not for the faint hearted.

What’s next for Gozer?

An Endless Static will be release on June 17 via Trepanation Recordings.

The band are set to play Sheffield’s Riffolution Festival on September 18, where they’ll be appearing at Network alongside the likes of Godflesh, Svalbard and Palm Reader.
