RED HOT TRACK OF THE WEEK: REEKING AURA

Song

What Only Worms Witness

Artist

Reeking Aura

Reeking Aura backstory

Blood & Bonemeal, Reeking Aura’s debut, was one of 2022’s surprise packages. The band’s tense, dense death metal rose from the depths of the NYC/New Jersey underground, dripping in ectoplasm and bearing some seriously infectious grooves. Harvesting the Hatchet was a particularly punishing highlight.

They’re now intent on doing even more damage, backed this time by legendary producer Dan Swanö.

For upcoming album On The Promise Of The Moon, original guitarists Terrell Grannum and Rick Habeeb, plus vocalist William Smith, have been joined by drummer Hudson Barth and bassist TJ Coon.

Names like Thaetas, Buckshot Facelift, Sentient Horror, Trog and Afterbirth are found on their collective CV.

So what does that actually sound like? Find out on What Only Worms Witness…

In Will Smith’s own words

“Lyrically, What Only Worms Witness is a contrasting depiction of both the ugliness of physical death and the melancholy optimism of enduring legacy.

“Like many songs on the album, it reflects on grudges, the passing of time and paying homage to the deceased.

“Writing for this song was spearheaded by bassist TJ Coon, showcasing Reeking Aura’s dedication to brutal New York death metal combined with dark melodies and atmosphere.”

The verdict on What Only Worms Witness

More direct than anything on Blood & Bonemeal, What Only Worms Witness is a killer blow from Reeking Aura, one that marries punishing percussive dexterity with chiselled songcraft. There’s a strong hint of Immolation’s shattering rhythms to the verses – which is undoubtedly welcome – but it’s the surging, melodies that make the track special. They’re contagious.

More material like this, and Reeking Aura will be cementing their place on US death metal’s front line.

What’s next for Reeking Aura?

On The Promise Of The Moon will be released on April 17 via Profound Lore Records.
