Gwailo backstory
2026 ushers in Gwailo’s 10th anniversary but the North East rockers are only just getting started.
Making their hotly anticipated live debut in 2017, the band’s bagged support slots with everyone from Gorilla Riot to The Hot Damn!.
Debut EP A Thousand Masks showcased Gwailo’s so-called ‘bad natured blues’ within singles Innocent, Try Me and Rock N Roll Seduction proving to be instant fan favourites.
2025’s already seen the band go from strength to strength and the year got off to a flier with a run of shows in mainland Europe.
Gigs with Black Spiders, Syteria and JoanOvArc bolstered a burgeoning reputation and work on a debut album is well underway.
In Gwailo frontman Michael Curry’s own words
“The song is pretty much based on three different periods of my life where it felt like weekdays always sucked and the only time I could enjoy myself was the weekend.
“It is meant as an upbeat song to get people singing along and ready to enjoy themselves for sure.
“But I also intended it to make people think about if their lives are in a similar place, purely just living for the weekend, maybe you want to try make a change in your life to find more joy.”
The verdict on Live For The Weekend
An anthem for the disaffected, Live For The Weekend will resonate with anyone and everyone who’s ever been stuck in a dead-end job, going nowhere.
It’s a celebration of fun times, friendship and figuring things out as frontman Michael Curry points to a better future.
Reminiscent of Rushonrock-approved Cumbrian rockers Heartbreak Remedy, Gwailo trade on classic rock riffs and garage rock grit.
Live For The Weekend echoes the sound 80s hair ballads — think Poison and Cinderella — and NWOCR groove as the North East-based band bid for next-level recognition.
That leap towards the big leagues might depend on a crisper production and a sharper focus.
But time’s on their side.
Gwailo might Live For The Weekend but this is the sound of an ambitious band plotting long term success.
What’s next for Gwailo
Completing work on their debut album is the primary focus heading into 2026.
A release date is expected to be confirmed soon and the band is already booking summer festival dates across the UK.
