Dolly Parton and Rob Halford backstory
One of the more iconic images of 2022’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony was country queen Dolly Parton sharing the stage with metal titan Rob Halford.
It was on that famous night in Los Angeles that Parton revealed her surprise induction had prompted the decision to do something she’d always toyed with: record a rock album.
Earlier this year a full tracklist surfaced featuring a slew of wild collaborations.
And it confirmed Parton and Halford had hooked up again to record the bombastic Bygones.
Mötley Crüe duo Nikki Sixx and John 5 have added their hair metal heft to the mix.
And unsurprisingly one of the most talked about duets of the year doesn’t disappoint.
In Dolly Parton’s own words
“Bygones is an original song of mine featuring Rob Halford from Judas Priest with Nikki Sixx and John 5.
“It is one of my very favourites on the whole album.
“The song fits with so many couples and coupling my voice with Rob, one of my all-time favourites, made it even more special.”
The verdict on Bygones
Forget any lazy preconceptions of what you think a duet between country music royalty and one of heavy metal’s founding fathers might sound like.
Because Bygones is so much better than that.
Hearing Halford alongside Parton is like listening to a Maserati revving up next to a Rolls Royce.
Two distinct voices fit together like a glove to drive this love song for the ages.
And it’s a genuine treat to experience Halford revealing the softer side to his trademark fury alongside the fired-up Parton.
Parton famously turned down her Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction first time around.
And she only accepted it — albeit reluctantly — after pledging to realise her rock and roll dreams.
Bygones is a truly brilliant response.
