Twitching Tongues – Disharmony (Metal Blade)
Genre: Metallic hardcore
Twitching Tongues haven’t held anything back on their third full length, a highly emotional release which sees vocalist Colin Young wearing his anguish on his sleeve.
Yes, it’s an often brutal piece of work, which is no surprise considering Young’s brother Taylor (of Nails fame) is on guitar duties. However, Disharmony’s ten tracks extend far beyond metallic hardcore’s traditional boundaries, with the gothic tones of Type O Negative or even Life of Agony having a strong influence on songs like Arrival and the monstrous closer, Cruci-Fiction. This album is full of surprises… like a dark alley where some unseen evil lurks in the shadows, ready to make a grab for your soul. And it’s all the better for it.
Tracks such as Insincerely Yours meld fierce, chugging riffs with gutsy, melodic choruses, and while there are plenty of passages of pure, raging violence (Cannibal, the title track), they are unleashed at the right moments, making a deeper impact as a result.
A difficult album? Sure. But Twitching Tongues have spoken… and it’s high time the world listened.
