Undergang – Døden Læger Alle Sår (Dark Descent)

Genre: Death Metal

With enough low-end rumble to level a city – or at the very least, knock that constipation problem on the head – Undergang play filthy, scuzzy death metal that’s so glutinous it oozes out of your speakers, rather than punches its way out of them.

There’s no doubt the Danes have their old-school sound nailed and you can’t help banging your head to the likes of Ad Ligbitum or the powerful stomp of Dødsfald: the problem is that too often, the trio’s sonic attack is mired in so much gunk that it feels too fetid for its own good, and the riffs are buried beneath a layer of slime.

Perhaps Radbrækket or Gravrust might work better live, but on record they are distinctly lacklustre, and the same can be said for most of the trio’s third album.

A few hardened death metallers will certainly lap this out, however the rest of us are probably better off digging up our old Autopsy albums instead. Richard Holmes
