Maruta – Remain Dystopian (Relapse)
Genre: Grindcore/Death Metal
Maruta’s vicious third album isn’t an easy listen – however it does show for far grind can be pushed. The Floridians make you feel that their complex music can descend into chaos at any point, but are technically gifted enough to ensure it never does, and they can disorientate their listeners in a way few grindcore bands can – the lurching Submergence aka Barren Oceans of Infinity is a case in point.
Of course, they can also leave your ear drums a bloody mess too, as the (almost) groovy Hope Smasher and the hyperspeed Erode (complete with vocals from Pig Destroyer’s JR Hayes) prove. And Maruta even veer into morbid, death/doom territory on Return to Zero.
Want a musical challenge? Get through these 17 tracks with your sanity still intact. Remain Dystopian is an uncomfortable experience and throws numerous curveballs… but this Miami outfit should be applauded for their adventurism. Richard Holmes
