Review – Mastodon

@ Newcastle o2 Academy, February 21 2010

Imagine Yes as a polished thrash metal band and this is the sound you would hear. Progressive, intricate, mind-blowing works played with intense pace and a good degree of passion.

Mastodon might have mellowed (relatively speaking) with the much lauded Crack The Skye but at their heart is a rhythm section determined to leave no artistic stone unturned. The controlled power unleashed by drummer Brann Dailor and bass player Troy Sanders is at the heart of this band’s explosive live performance and truly is a marvel to behold. Yes 2009@ Newcastle City Hall, November 20 2009

Yes? No? Maybe…

There’s still a Wakeman but not a recognised frontman. There’s one original member, two new faces, three old stagers and five fantastic musicians. And surely that’s the point.

Rock is renowned for the transient nature of its band’s line-ups and after four decades pumping out prog standards it’s no surprise the Yes roundabout has spawned around 16 members over the years. But the 2009 version is all that matters right now. Read the rest of this entry »

quireboys paulThis week we celebrate Brit Rock – that sleazy, bluesy, hair metal-inspired movement which peaked around the late 80s and early 90s when a slew of great British bands back big record deals and crashed the charts with refreshing regularity.

There’s an exclusive chat with Quireboy Paul Guerin (pictured) plus a full review of the reissued A Bit Of What You Fancy and the chance for five lucky rushonrock readers to win a copy – featuring sleeve notes by our very own editor Simon Rushworth!

Ready to kick off a full UK tour in his role as frontman with the reformed Gun he’s in typically ebullient mood. Terrorvision hit The Vinyl Countdown and there’ll be an honourbale mention for Thunder somewhere along the line. But that’s not all folks…  Read the rest of this entry »

Rock O’ The North…Pt58

rock-o-the-north

If Jon Anderson really believes Yes fans feel cheated that the band is going about their business in his absence then it’s high time the voice of so many outstanding prog rock records experiences a harsh but necessary reality check.

Those of us who follow classic rock would rarely see a live show if we boycotted those acts ploughing merrily on in the absence of their most celebrated singer or guitarist. And unlike Anderson we accept that times change. Line-ups change. Music changes. Read the rest of this entry »
