Review – Kids In Glass Houses

@ Newcastle University, May 2 2010

Welsh quintet Kids In Glass Houses returned to Newcastle University to showcase their new album Dirt. And it’s clearly a record they love.

Throughout the night the band insisted on playing songs off the new album rather than a range from their back catalogue – even though, at first, it seemed as though only a handful of people had even listened to the new songs.   Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan & Crazy Arm

@ Newcastle Northumbria University, March 15 2010

Frank Turner was back in Newcastle accompanied by former Hot Water Music star Chuck Ragan and Crazy Arm. You don’t often see three good acts at one gig but tonight at Northumbria University was one of those exceptions.

Crazy Arm were very easy to listen to and watch, easing the crowd into the night effortlessly and seemingly pleasing everybody. Even without the carefully sculpted light show the guys’ set would have been fulfilling and it was difficult to not feel influenced by their lively and enthusiastic nature. Review – A Day To Remember

@ Newcastle University, March 9 2010

A Day to Remember at Newcastle University was a good venue choice after the show sold out quicker than expected at the O2 Academy and had to be upgraded to a larger room.

The band’s headlining tour is mostly sold out and tonight fans seemed to turn out for the two support acts just as much as for the headliners.

Your Demise took to the stage first and although the whole room wasn’t buzzing, a handful of people set about ‘moshing’ before the band had even played a note. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Elliot Minor

Pop rock buzz band Elliot Minor took to the stage in Newcastle to perform the last of their English tour dates in front of a surprisingly small audience at Northumbria University’s modest student union venue.

With their self titled debut album reaching the dizzying heights of six in the UK charts in 2008, one might have expected larger numbers. However it seems the change in venue from the city’s Academy was made to suit a more intimate crowd. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock O’ The North…Pt64

Perhaps he should be receiving the degree of Doctor of Notes (both for those he has hit and those he has earned), rather than that of Doctor of Letters, but next Friday will see one of the greatest names in rock honoured by his hometown university.

And not before time.

Paul Rodgers is, quite simply, at the top of his game as a revered rock vocalist and perennial entertainer. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Fightstar, Saving Aimee, Young Guns & Prego

Fightstar@ Newcastle University Basement, October 26 2009

Play any Fightstar song to your average rock fan and challenge them to guess its origins. There could only be a minute chance that they would guess the screaming lead vocals are sung by a member of boy band Busted – namely Charlie Simpson.

It is a surreal sight to see the same man who used to sing about air-hostesses, visiting the future and school boy crushes now falling into the ‘emo-screamo’ category. But for the most part it works. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Frank Turner & Fake Problems

frank-turner-little@ Newcastle University Basement, October 17 2009

Some of you may only be familiar with the name Frank Turner from the post-hardcore band Million Dead who sadly went their separate ways after four years and two albums in 2005.

The band members pursued their own projects, resulting in the revelation that is Frank Turner as a solo artist and delivering the talented folk/punk singer-songwriter who now has three studio albums and a sold out autumn 2009 UK tour. Read the rest of this entry »
