Black metal legends Venom have joined fellow Geordie boys Quireboys on the increasingly eclectic bill that is this summer’s High Voltage festival – with six new acts announced today.

Cronos (pictured) and his crew join Spike’s mob for the London two-dayer alongside UFO, Transatlantic, The Union and Zappa Plays Zappa.

And fans can already look forward to sets from ZZ Top, ELP, Heaven & Hell, The Answer, Foreigner and Marillion to name but a few. Read the rest of this entry »

Just when it looked like new kid on the block High Voltage was struggling to keep pace with rival festivals Sonisphere and Download, the Classic Rock magazine-backed guitar fest has gone and pulled its latest batch of rabbits out of the hat.

And with The Answer and Joe Bonamassa just two of the new acts announced to tread the main stage boards there’s suddenly an exciting new look about the Victoria Park event.

With the legendary ZZ Top and ELP headlining the July event – with guests Heaven & Hell, Foreigner and Marillion boosting the bill – High Voltage had already made a serious mark on the summer festival scene. But now it seems the latest two-day rock shindig is pressing its claims to be judged as a main player in 2010. Read the rest of this entry »

Backed by our favourite monthly music mag and promising in excess of 40 bands over two days, High Voltage is billing itself as the prestige festival for classic rockers.

Headliners ELP and ZZ Top don’t quite do it for us but there’s bound to be a raft of hard rocking talent on the undercard – with acts like The Answer, Stone Gods and Quireboys hotly tipped to bag sought after support slots. Read the rest of this entry »

Answer 1Resize@ Newcastle o2 Academy, November 28 2009

In the build up to this hotly anticipated gig it was a case of more questions than answers. Would a band out on the road with AC/DC for the best part of a year still have the hunger and stamina to make a success of their long awaited UK headline tour?

How would Everyday Demons come across live? And have one of 2008’s brightest prospects turned potential into star quality under the watchful eye of Brian Johnson and co.?

So many questions and only one Answer. But what a convincing Answer it was. Read the rest of this entry »

rock-o-the-north

Those of us who believed Iron Maiden’s Brit Award would herald a new era of recognition for rock have been brought crashing back down to earth with an almighty bang this week.

And the blast which heralded an uncomfortable reacquaintance with reality? That complete joke of a nominations list called the Mercury Music Awards.

According to the blurb which prefaced the latest raft of nominees in the race for the 2009 prize, ‘The Barclaycard Mercury Prize for ‘Albums of the Year’ celebrates and promotes the best of British and Irish music. All genres of music are eligible for entry and all are treated equally, the music on the album is the only thing taken into account.’ All genres apart from rock and metal, apparently.
