The band responsible for rushonrock’s 2008 Album Of The Year, US comeback kings Tesla, continue to set new standards with the release of a brand new live record.
Alive In Europe does what it says on the tin with 15 tracks culled from various venues across the continent. We checked them out twice in 24 hours last summer and the results were outstanding.
Released next month, the Frontiers Records’ follow-up to the phenomenal Forever More should complement the band’s legendary Five Man Acoustical Jam and whet fans’ appetites for the next studio album. Read the rest of this entry »

Without hair metal where would I be?
Still listening to Dead Or Alive, perhaps? Still spinning A-ha, maybe? Never looking beyond Radio One or Q Magazine?
It’s a frightening prospect and an outcome which strikes fear into a rock and metal fan with more than 20 years of power chords and guitar solos under his belt. Read the rest of this entry »
We’re fast approaching the end of another rocktastic year and all week we’re celebrating the best – and the worst – of 2009.
Today we focus on the shows which blew us away during the last 12 months.
And after witnessing well over 100 sets from seasoned vets to raw rookies we reckon we’ve found the top 10.

We’ve been backing the Black Stone Cherry boys for some time now and it’s safe to say there can’t be many bands who’ve entertained us so often and so brilliantly throughout 2009.
With a new record in the pipeline for the second half of 2010 and no doubt yet another round of quality shows and festival slots to come we can only see the Edmonton, Kentucky quartet getting bigger. And bigger. And bigger.
But before they do we caught up with frontman Chris Robertson for a final bite of the ‘Cherry this year. Read the rest of this entry »

@ Castle Donington, Main Stage, June 14 2009
Talk to certain members of the Tesla road crew and they were more than a little miffed to be playing so early on a classic rock soaked bill. Their argument was that with more than 16m album sales under their belts and a back catalogue to die for they deserved to be bumped up at least a couple of spots. Fair points, both.
But the fact that Tesla were there at all is testimony to the foresight of promoters well aware that this massive US band is back in the big time. And if their set was criminally short then Jeff Keith and the boys didn’t allow that to stop them from putting on a typically sensational show.

More than 70,000 expectant punters always hoped it would be something special. First came the news that the final day had a Classic Rock flavour, then the big name headliners were confirmed and finally the baking hot sun arrived right on cue. If ever Download was going to deliver a day to remember then this day would surely be it.
In fact it was better than that. Way, way better. This is what watching live rock music is all about and while I admire those who packed in all three days without barely breaking into a sweat, it’s just as well I decided to forgo Faith No More and sidestep Slipknot. Read the rest of this entry »
@ Newcastle o2 Academy, June 15 2009
There is one reason Tesla were chosen to play the main stage at Download this year – one of the least heralded blues metal bands of the late 80s has always delivered, despite a criminal lack of critical acclaim. And if their Castle Donington set was brilliant yet brief, this headline show allowed Jeff Keith and co. the opportunity to remind Newcastle just why they were once one of America’s hottest properties. And why they could be again. Read the rest of this entry »

What an event as the spirit of Monsters Of Rock lived on at Download’s Classic Rock Sunday – and rushonrock was there to see it all (or some of it)!
This week we deliver the definitive view of a mesmerising day with reviews of Leppard, Whitesnake, Journey, Dream Theater, Black Stone Cherry, Stone Gods, Tesla, Shinedown and the fabulous Steel Panther! There’s all the backstage gossip, some cheeky pics and a list of our highs and lows. Enjoy.
But that’s not all this week. Tesla play Newcastle’s o2 Academy tonight with rising rockers People In Planes at Whitley Bay’s Trojan Rooms. And Self Made Man delivers his verdict on UFO at the o2. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the true founders of heavy metal clashes with one of the new guardians of the genre this week as rushonrock turns the spotlight on Black Sabbath’s latest Greatest Hits package and the new record from spoof rocksters Steel Panther – we’re going to try to check that lot out at Download later today but for our view on their debut Feel The Steel read on. Tesla – Edison’s Medicine (Keith/Hannon/Skeoch/Wheat/Barbiero) b/w Had Enough (Keith/Skeoch) 1991
One of six singles culled from the superb Psychotic Supper, the intricate Edison’s Medicine might not be as famous as Love Song or Signs but it’s Tesla rocking out like only they can.
Jeff Keith and Frank Hannon dovetail perfectly and you’d be pretty hard pressed to find a better example of modern rock from the early 90s – songs like these suggest Tesla could have been so much bigger than they ever were or will be. Read the rest of this entry »
