HIGH VOLTAGE: HIGH LIGHTS

Posted by simon On July - 26 - 2010 1 COMMENT

So we’ve finally come down from the high that was High Voltage and we reckon the inaugural Victoria Park-based festival was a big hit!

So the walk from the tube was just a touch too far and the pork and stilton burgers lacked any bite but the bands were as brilliant as the weather.

We’ll be bringing you full reviews of selected artists all this week but for now here’s the list of our 2010 High Voltage High Lights. Read the rest of this entry »

Brazil Nuts For RnR

LA sleazegrinder Tracii Guns is confident old pals the Quireboys will be a big hit once the Brit band hit Brazil for the first time later this year.

The LA Guns’ guitar hero has just returned from his latest stint in South America – a trip he makes every year in return for the fanatical support of one of his most loyal fan bases.

And Guns was delighted to hear the Quireboys will follow suit later this year after revealing: “South America is starved of traditional rock and roll. Read the rest of this entry »

Quireboys – Brother Louie (Brown/Wilson) b/w Tramps And Thieves (Live) (Gray/Bailey) & I Don’t Love You Anymore (Live) (Gray/Bailey)

1993 Collectors’ Edition 12″ Red Vinyl plus Giant Colour Poster

Not a song you’ll hear much these days but at the time Spike and the gang made this classic their own.

Released when the band were on the wane – commercially at least – it didn’t do much to dent the charts.

But there’s something about hearing Spike sing Brother Louie which still makes the hairs stand up on your neck today. But this little package is about so much more than the title track with the bright red transparent vinyl a collector’s delight. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Quireboys

@ Newcastle o2 Academy, December 20 2009

Kicking off with the timeless Mayfair, there were moments when this rowdy Academy affair could have been taking place two decades earlier in the much missed venue which inspired Spike’s rock and roll dreams.

There were all the tracks off the classic A Bit Of What You Fancy record, all the moves by the Quireboys’ ever youthful frontman and all the nods to a native Newcastle crowd which still welcomes this band home like returning heroes.

Time stood still while those present merrily drowned in a sea of late 80s nostalgia.

Perhaps the venue wasn’t as full as it might have been but there was ample room for all those folk who couldn’t squeeze into the smaller venue upstairs 12 months earlier. And in any case this was the biggest home crowd the Quireboys had entertained for a decade. Read the rest of this entry »

New York DollsWhat better way to warm up for Hard Rock Hell III than with new releases from New York Dolls’ Steve Conte (pictured) and the Quireboys?

We review and rate the latest records by both artists right here.

But if funk metal is more your bag then the return of old favourites Living Colour should brighten up the dreariest of December days. Read the rest of this entry »

Crewe Cut?

quireboys spikerushonrock understands the opening gig of the Quireboys’ 20th anniversary tour has been cancelled due to problems with the venue.

Spike (pictured) and the boys were due to kick off the A Bit Of What You Fancy 2009 tour at Crewe’s famous Limelight Club on December 3 before heading to Belfast and then back to the UK for their Hard Rock Hell appearance on December 6.

And although the gig is still listed on the band’s official website it seems the show is no more. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock O’ The North…Pt50

rock-o-the-north

To anyone outside of London the North East must seem like a tiny little corner of an unwelcoming world, where in-breds and flat cap wearing weirdos speak like Brian Johnson and dress like Ginger on a bad day.

But we don’t really care about that. Because we’re bloody good at what we do and, most importantly, shouting about it from the rooftops. Johnno, Spike and Paul from the Quireboys and even Teesside crooners David Coverdale and Paul Rodgers never miss an opportunity to namecheck Newcastle, Blyth, Saltburn, Middlesbrough or wherever. spikeThe Quireboys are back on home turf tonight as they open up for Thunder at Newcastle’s City Hall and lead singer Spike is in typically ebullient mood.
