Quireboys – Brother Louie (Brown/Wilson) b/w Tramps And Thieves (Live) (Gray/Bailey) & I Don’t Love You Anymore (Live) (Gray/Bailey)
1993 Collectors’ Edition 12″ Red Vinyl plus Giant Colour Poster
Not a song you’ll hear much these days but at the time Spike and the gang made this classic their own.
Released when the band were on the wane – commercially at least – it didn’t do much to dent the charts.
But there’s something about hearing Spike sing Brother Louie which still makes the hairs stand up on your neck today. But this little package is about so much more than the title track with the bright red transparent vinyl a collector’s delight. Read the rest of this entry »

They released one of the most startling debuts of 2009 and despite coming across like a 70s blues rock powerhouse insist their sound is nothing like classic rock.
Yep, The Parlor Mob are a crew full of contradictions and that’s what makes the US band ones to watch next year.
We’re watching them already and we caught up with guitar hero David Rosen. Read the rest of this entry »

Winger produced some of the greatest songs ever to emerge from the hair metal era two decades ago and despite constant ridicule on MTV survived to fight another day.
That day has arrived with the release of the sensational Karma – one of the contenders for rushonrock’s albums of the year – and a full UK headline tour next March.
Founder member Kip Winger took time out to look back on the hair metal glory days, the bittersweet taste of commercial success and why it’s obvious he’s in a band crammed full with his best buddies. Oh, and he even gives his verdict on grunge… Read the rest of this entry »
Poison – Stand (Michaels/Dall/Rockett/Kotzen) b/w Native Tongue/Scream (Michaels/Dall/Rockett/Kotzen) 1993
By the time Stand hit stores hair metal was clinging on for dear life in the face of the unrelenting advance of grunge and US audiences had all but deserted Brett Michaels and co. in 1993.
This excellent song, from the mature yet underrated Native Tongue record, may have hit 25 on the UK singles chart but it only just limped into the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100.
And pretty soon after Poison were forced to accept defeat with the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden stamping all over their MTV heartland. Read the rest of this entry »

We’re less than three weeks away from the release of one of the most pivotal gigs in rock history and the first glimpse of a touched up Nirvana playing Reading in 1992 can be viewed right here.
Although countless bootlegs of the band’s legendary festival set exist, this version is the real thing with colour enhanced technology and audio sourced from the original masters.
And from what we’ve seen any self respecting fan of rock will want to own a unique piece of the Kurt Cobain action when the Live At Reading DVD is unleashed on November 2.
Initial formats include the must-have DVD/CD deluxe edition, a single DVD and the audio on CD. But for vinyl fans the double LP due out on November 16 will be well worth waiting for. Read the rest of this entry »

Pearl Jam – Backspacer Gatefold Vinyl Edition (Universal)
We’ve had a week to judge whether this might well be the best Pearl Jam record we’ve ever heard and the verdict? It is.
Incredibly it sounds like the record Eddie Vedder and co. might have been expected to deliver at a time when hair metal dominated and grunge was in its infancy.
Influenced more by classic rock than the Seattle scene, it’s polished, often upbeat and always challenging. In fact, if you’ve always been put off Pearl Jam because of their roots then it’s time to give the band their due – and your time – in 2009. Read the rest of this entry »
Firehouse – When I Look Into Your Eyes (Snare/Leverty) b/w Life In The Real World (Snare/Leverty) 1992
The lighter waving classic was issued as a rather strangely sculpted seven inch vinyl in the UK and to this day we can’t determine what it’s supposed to represent. But what this single looks like shouldn’t detract from what it sounds like – and it sounds exactly how any hair metal anthem should with layered vocals, a soaring guitar solo and some of the best cheese this side of France.
The slightly nasal tone of lead singer CJ Snare might have annoyed many but with sales of seven million and counting under their belts Firehouse must be doing something right. And they’re still doing it today! Read the rest of this entry »

No doubt this will top any grunge fan’s Christmas list and, while Kurt and his pals did hair metal no favours in the mid 90s, even we admit to being massive fans of the mighty Nirvana. The unveiling of their definitive Reading set will have music nuts the world over going wobbly at the knees and the November 2 release date can’t come soon enough!
We still remember watching the clip for Smells Like Teen Spirit for the very first time on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball and being blown away by the sheer ferocity of Cobain and his hard rocking buddies. The fact that their music encouraged the ferel rock beasts that were/are Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains means we can just about forgive them for persuading Def Leppard to record Slang!. Ten years ago this month a North East institution closed its doors for the final time as The Mayfair made way for a massive cinema, restaurants and bars now known as The Gate.
Spanning four decades as the biggest rock club in Europe, the venue played host to every guitar band worht its salt including the likes of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Guns N Roses and, famously, Nirvana. Check out a couple of tix unearthed from the rushonrock vaults and check out the deliberate mistake on one of them. Then share your Mayfair memories by leaving a comment – and if you’re off to tonight’s o2 Academy Reunion enjoy! Read the rest of this entry »
