REVIEW – NEW RELEASES

Posted by simon On August - 1 - 2010 1 COMMENT

August is upon us and if you’re a fan of top notch rock and metal then tomorrow’s new releases ensure you’ll be totally spoilt for choice.

There’s the post-Rev return of Avenged Sevenfold, the retro cool comeback from sleaze merchants Buckcherry and a slice of India’s finest from Demonic Resurrection.

Throw in the debut album from the Rick Rubin-endorsed Violent Soho plus some old school fantasy metal in the shape of Blind Guardian and late summer has never sounded so good! Read the rest of this entry »

After a successful stint with his adopted band across America, drummer Nick Augusto has won one of the hottest seats in metal for good.

A more than useful stand-in on the US leg of Trivium’s Into The Mouth Of Hell We Tour trek, the skinsman appears on new track Shattering The Skies Above.

And singer Matt Heafy today confirmed Augusto has replaced Travis Smith for good. Read the rest of this entry »

Plenty Of Promise

Released in the UK on March 1 and knocking spots off the new Bon Jovi record, we can’t get enough of the new Giant record Promise Land.

Once again Italian melodic rock label Frontiers Records have served up a treat in the shape of a thrilling 13-track return to form.

Ballad Our Love might belong in an 80s rock club crammed full with lighter-waving fans but it’s an absolute belter of a track.

And it’s followed by the fantastic, Europe-esque Prisoner Of Love with its anthemic chorus and blistering axe work. Read the rest of this entry »

finntrollresizeWeird and wonderful metal monsters Finntroll have revealed new record Nifelvind will be released next February and the band is promising its most diverse work to date.

Recorded at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland and mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios, the album’s cover artwork was again supplied by the band’s own guitarist Skrymer.

And the doom-laden Finns explained: “After tough and hectic weeks in the studio, due to lack of time and summer festivals, we are now really, really pleased with the results. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock O’ The North…Pt62

rock-o-the-north

There was a time not so long ago when we were told print was yesterday’s media and the unrelenting march of the Internet would crush everything in its path.

As national and regional newspapers battle to retain ever-dwindling readerships there are those who would argue that the end is, indeed nigh, for those who produce words for consumption in the physical form.

And the success of this very website – with more than 50,000 unique users passing through these pages in its first year – backs up the opinion that the world wide web is the only way forward. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock Solid Extra – Bon Jovi Reviewed

bon joviThey’re one of rock’s great survivors and if they’re no longer Livin’ On A Prayer – all their prayers have been answered including that dream slot on X Factor – then Bon Jovi are still, at least, living.

With five number one albums under their belts in the UK alone it’s not as if Jon and the boys really need to work these days. Or at least they don’t have to work too hard.

But a lot of effort has gone into latest release The Circle and with an o2 Arena residency on the cards Bon Jovi is still a band demanding attention. So we’re giving them it in the shape of a full review.   Read the rest of this entry »

lita fordTomorrow sees the return of the ultimate hair metal babe as Lita Ford (left) unleashes her hotly anticipated comeback record Wicked Wonderland. We review and rate it right here.

So who’s the former Runaway up against this week?

Big hitters Bon Jovi and Slayer bring their latest tunes to the table so look out for a Rock Solid special later this week.

In the meantime we check out the old school metal of Saviours and some stripped down Sharon den Adel (if only) as Within Temptation go all acoustic.

Then there’s the full-on assault that is Fu Manchu as the stoner legends return with one of their most accomplished and accesible albums to date.

But does any of it come close to lovely Lita? Find out right here… Read the rest of this entry »
