Here at rushonrock we love a bit of sprawling, innovative, instrumental metal and it appears red sparowes are about to deliver manna from heaven. They’re even delivering it on vinyl.
On April 5, the US semi-supergroup (boasting members of Isis and Made Out Of babies among others) release the superbly titled The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer.
And we reckon it’s one of those albums you just have to own on a slab of 12-inch plastic – the band agrees and a vinyl edition will be issued alongside the traditional CD. Read the rest of this entry »

Imagine Yes as a polished thrash metal band and this is the sound you would hear. Progressive, intricate, mind-blowing works played with intense pace and a good degree of passion.
Mastodon might have mellowed (relatively speaking) with the much lauded Crack The Skye but at their heart is a rhythm section determined to leave no artistic stone unturned. The controlled power unleashed by drummer Brann Dailor and bass player Troy Sanders is at the heart of this band’s explosive live performance and truly is a marvel to behold. Valentine’s Day may be all about red roses, big hearts and sloppy kisses but not if you’re a member of HIM or Dommin. We look at two of rock’s chief anti-love protagonists and a whole load of other stuff this week.
There’s the long awaited Best Of from our favourite Scando sleaze kings Backyard Babies (pictured) and the debut solo album from Cradle Of Filth crooner Sarah Jezebel Deva.
Throw in some seriously heavy shit from Rising Records’ label mates Sworn Amongst and With Chaos In Her Wake and there’s plenty to keep the metal heads out there happy. Plus we check out a snappy debut from buzz band Straight Lines – fresh from a triumphant 2009 touring with Kids In Glass Houses, The Automatic and Motorhead. Read the rest of this entry »

After touring with Metallica for 25 dates at the end of last year, US band Lamb of God came to Newcastle for the second date of their UK tour hoping to live up to their big name and smash expectations.
On a night of much promise, metal-core band Between The Buried And Me were the first of three support acts to kick off the bill. Combining thrash, prog and death metal, BTBAM lashed out a harsh screaming frenzy only to burst unexpectedly into soft melodic synths. Read the rest of this entry »

Glam metal takes centre stage this week as dolled up heroes Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z’Nuff join forces to roll back the rock years – we review both bands right here.
Continuing the theme and we welcome the Electric Boys to our hot new vinyl feature – 12@12. And there’s some great craic with 2010’s take on homegrown hair metal – The Crave – as the band debut on the rushonrock Rider.
Ensuring your fave site maintains a heavier edge we’ll rate Lamb Of God on their metal as hell UK headline tour. And there’s an exclusive interview with buzz band Dommin as they toast a successful tour with Lacuna Coil and look forward to more UK dates with H.I.M.. And there’s more. Security at the former Carling Academy has taken on a whole new meaning since becoming the O2 Academy.
Tonight I had to squeeze past groups of teenagers having their ID scrutinised for an over 14s only performance. After missing My Passion’s performance, next up were Young Guns who launched into a generic set with bland songs where one tune was indistinguishable from the next. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s rock Jim but not as we know it. This week saw the release controversial rapper Lil Wayne’s new album, Rebirth. So what’s a hip hop artist’s new release got to do with anything in this fine rock Mecca?
Rebirth sees Mr Wayne Jnr. take his auto-tuned voice in a completely new direction, with a rap/rock effort. I won’t pretend the release will be adored by rock lovers, quite the opposite in fact. Read the rest of this entry »

Israeli prog metal might have been overlooked in the past – and we’re as guilty as anyone of ignoring it (!) – but the fantastic Orphaned Land appear to be on a mission to bring the genre to the masses.
Preaching a message of togetherness from within a nation riddled by division, the sensational six-piece combine traditional metal with an eastern flavour to give Dream Theater a run for their money.
But after facing a volley of criticism following their latest publicity shots (see picture), in support of next month’s The Never Ending Way Of The ORwarriOR, frontman Kobi Fahri has been forced to speak out. Read the rest of this entry »

Live music returns this week in the shape of new-look Aussie rockers Wolfmother and metal maidens Kittie. Needless to say we’ll be keeping tabs on both.
There’s an exclusive interview with Danger Danger’s Ted Poley as we build up to a very special week for lovers of all things hair metal.
And we feature Finntroll’s (pictured) Vreth in the ever-popular rushonrock Rider. There’s an all-time classic from Alice Cooper as we feature more big-size vinyl on the 12@12. And there’s more! Read the rest of this entry »
