Rock O’ The North…Pt82

Every once in a while it’s great to be reminded of the nice guys in rock. And where Kip Winger is concerned it’s hard to imagine any nicer.

Here’s a singer who could have packed in playing the music he loves a long time ago. Ridiculed on one of the biggest cartoons of its kind in the early 90s for nothing more than excelling in the lighter side of metal, he stuck to his guns. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Winger

@ Newcastle o2 Academy II, March 30 2010

If Steel Panther are the parody then Winger are the real thing. And in the same month hair metal’s spoof heroes treated Tyneside to a set so close to the bone it made grown men cry, this was a rare chance to get up close and personal with a true great of the genre.

There was a time when watching Kip Winger tear through the hits inside the cramped but atmospheric Academy II would have been unimaginable. Unfairly targeted by cult MTV cartoon Beavis and Butthead then, like so many of their pretty boy peers, crushed by the onslaught that was grunge, this was one band which never seemed capable of mounting a comeback. Hair Metal Hero – Kip Winger

Posted by simon On January - 18 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

He might have been the subject of some pretty cruel criticism on MTV’s Beavis and Butthead but Kip Winger has always been the definitive hair metal hero.

And after delivering some of the best records in the business 20 years ago the multi-talented muso is riding high on the back of 2009 release Karma.

Read on to find out the hair metal history behind that man Kip. And look out for a new hair metal hero every day as we celebrate Hair Metal Week on rushonrock. Read the rest of this entry »

EXCLUSIVE – Winger Interview

Posted by simon On November - 3 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

winger1bookWinger produced some of the greatest songs ever to emerge from the hair metal era two decades ago and despite constant ridicule on MTV survived to fight another day.

That day has arrived with the release of the sensational Karma – one of the contenders for rushonrock‘s albums of the year – and a full UK headline tour next March.

Founder member Kip Winger took time out to look back on the hair metal glory days, the bittersweet taste of commercial success and why it’s obvious he’s in a band crammed full with his best buddies. Oh, and he even gives his verdict on grunge… Read the rest of this entry »

Kip It Real

winger1bookAs revealed on rushonrock last month, legendary US hair metal heroes Winger will be playing a full UK tour next spring – calling at 11 towns and cities in support of this month’s new album.

And on that subject we just can’t get enough of killer disc Karma as the band relive the early 90s glory days with a heady mix of steaming hard rockers and perfectly produced power ballads.

Frontman Kip Winger has rarely sounded so good and with long-term collaborator and Whitesnake man Reb Beach back in the fold there are the soaring riffs to match the classy vocals. Read the rest of this entry »

Winging In?

Posted by simon On September - 30 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

winger1bookKip Winger has confirmed his band will play as many as nine live dates across the UK in March after admitting reaction to new record Karma has stunned the hair metal heroes.

Winger release their latest album in October before embarking on a full European tour in November. That leg of the Karma tour takes the band up to Christmas but Kip told rushonrock tonight: “We’re coming to the UK in the spring.

“There’s at least seven dates and I think there could be as many as nine. We’re going to cover as much of the country as we can and it looks like the whole thing could be in conjunction with Classic Rock Magazine.” Read the rest of this entry »
