Hot Water Music – London Islington O2 Academy, June 21 2010

When the news reached the public that Hot Water Music would be returning after a three-year hiatus, and suspected disbandment, fans were already clammering for a UK tour.

He landed an 8/10 rushonrock album review last August and now Hot Water Music’s Chuck Ragan is heading back out on the road in support of the excellent Gold Country.

The punk rock troubadour kicks off his latest UK jaunt in Newcastle at the city’s Northumbria University on March 15 before racking up a further eight dates nationwide.

And it just so happens Ragan reckons his new material is some of the best he’s ever written. “The record is just another page in the book and another chapter in life,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

It may be premature to suggest as much but are we on the cusp of a brave new era for rock-orientated singer-songwriters capable of so much more than strumming a guitar and growling heavily into a low slung mic?

Rock and metal, by its very nature, is hardly geared towards solo artists packing nothing more than a semi-acoustic and a tiny amp. There are those who insist rock isn’t rock without a beefed up backline and heavy as shit rhythm section. stryper sweetMichael Sweet (pictured) makes a stunning return to form with Christian rockers Stryper this week and it’s ironic his band goes up against The Used – whose frontman Bert McCracken has owned up to urinating in holy water in the past.

In a bumper week for new releases we also check out the newie from trad metal stars 3 Inches Of Blood, bizarre label mates iwrestledabearonce and Chuck Ragan‘s impressive solo offering. Plus there’s the new records by Cain’s Offering and Outloud. Now, what to spend that spare tenner on…
