Vixen – Edge Of A Broken Heart (Marx/Waybill) b/w Charmed Life (Tripp/Paris)

1988 Limited Edition Cut-To-Shape Picture Disc

Now this little gem comes in a 12 inch sleeve and looks like a 12 inch record but the truth is it just isn’t.

As such it nearly missed the cut as far as 12@12 goes. But then we were never going to let the fact that this is an oversized seven incher deny our favourite girl band of the 80s another stab at rushonrock glory.

And now you’ve feasted your eyes on this neatly shaped vinyl set against a garish pink background we’re sure you’ll agree the small matter of five inches shouldn’t spoil our fun. This was the band’s first charting single on both sides of the Atlantic and the super smooth Richard Marx production and arrangement makes Edge Of A Broken Heart a true standard of the hair metal era. Whitesnake – The Deeper The Love (Coverdale/Vandenberg) b/w Judgement Day (Coverdale/Vandenberg) & Sweet Lady Luck (Coverdale/Vandenberg)

1990 Special Ltd Edition White Vinyl

Another Top 40 UK hit for DC and the gang and if you thought the six singles culled from 1987 were overly commercial by Whitesnake’s standards then this sugary sweet ballad took the band to a whole new level of pop rock sheen.

Featuring Steve Vai on guitar, The Deeper The Love was the third single taken from Slip Of The Tongue – the title track had failed to chart and the heat was on. Hitting 36 in the UK and charting one place higher in the US wasn’t much of an improvement for the original hair metal heroes but this tune is still a huge favourite with Whitesnake fans of a certain generation – Coverdale’s vocals have never sounded better. Rock O’ The North…Pt93

However hard certain sections of the rock and metal world may try there’s simply no stopping the Lycra and hairspray daubed juggernaut that is Steel Panther.

Twelve months ago they blew away the opposition with a short but sickly sweet set in a sweaty tent at Download. Back then they were still relative unknowns but such obscurity was never going to last. Read the rest of this entry »

Download: Reload – Steel Panther

Steel Panther – Download RJD Stage, June 13 2010

With rain lashing down, ankle-deep mud gathering underfoot and a main stage running well behind schedule, Sunday’s Download seemed to be taking a turn for the worse.

But one band changed all that. One band stopped the rain. One band made the mud tolerable. That band was Steel Panther.

Returning for their second performance in successive years at Download, the glam rockers meant business.

With the festival celebrating the last brilliant 30 years on the hallowed grounds of Donington. So it was fitting that a band inspired by a spoof 70s act, laced up and singing 80s style songs with a twist of modern day humour should steal the show. Read the rest of this entry »

Download: The ‘Load Down 2010

Posted by simon On June - 8 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

All this week we’re taking a look at the bands you dare not miss at Download 2010 and, as well as the obvious big names, we’ve picked a few up and coming stars of the future.

Reckless Love fall comfortably into that category and the flying Finns are in fantastic form heading into their Donington debut.

With their self-titled major label album winning rave reviews and gaining fair comparisons to the very best albums of the hair metal era you should check out these guys if big choruses and even bigger solos are your thing.

Think Kiss, Van Halen, Warrant or W.A.S.P. and you’re well on the way to imagining the freshest retro sounds coming out of Scandinavia right now. Read on for your guide to Reckless Love. Read the rest of this entry »

Dan Reed Network – Come Back Baby (Reed) b/w Come Alive (Reed) & Make It Easy (Reed)

1989

Dan Reed Network’s brand of easy listening funk rock really hit the mark as the MTV generation were hitting their stride and this mixed race multi-talented band delivered two outstanding records at the turn of the decade.

Their self-titled debut preceded Slam and both albums won widespread acclaim.

Support slots with Def Leppard, on the final leg of the Hysteria tour, Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones reinforced DRN’s status as the musicians’ ban of choice in the late 80s/early 90s. But the onset of grunge and a lack of label support led to an indefinite hiatus in 1993. Read the rest of this entry »

Femme Fatale – Waiting For The Big One (Neigher/Cole) b/w My Baby’s Gun (Rawd/Lewis)

1988 Limited Edition with Giant Colour Poster

Alongside Lita Ford, Vixen and Lisa Dominique, leggy blonde Lorraine Lewis was at the forefront of hair metal’s female assault.

An average singer with above average looks she joined forces with four hard rocking hunks straight off a Sunset Strip casting couch and Femme Fatale were born.

In fact the band came together in Albuquerque, New Mexico and once they’d been picked up by producer David Cole and MCA the future looked rosy for the band with everything. But two hit singles later and it was all over. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock Solid

This week’s new releases might be overshadowed by the man on your left but it’s not just Slash who’s hitting the mark with some pretty mean rock and roll right now.

We review and rate the fantastic Red Sparowes and check out the debut from Danish metal crew Anoxia.

There’s a five -track EP from indie rockers The Paddingtons and the glossy Vegas-inspired cock rock of  fast-rising stars Taking Dawn.

Plus we check out one of the buzz records of 2010 in the shape of Hungry & The Hunted’s hotly anticipated debut. Read the rest of this entry »
