REVIEW – GUNS 2 ROSES

Posted by simon On August - 7 - 2010 1 COMMENT

@ Newcastle o2 Academy, August 7 2010

Going for the line-up circa 1991 – the Use Your Illusion era minus Izzy Stradlin – headliners Guns 2 Roses swagger their way on stage to the intro of It’s So Easy.

Gilby Clarke, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagen get a warm welcome but Slash, as ever, steals the moment. Hidden behind a mass of curls and boasting the trademark top hat and low slung Gibson, the only things missing are a smouldering Marlborough red and a bottle of JD to complete the look. Slash – Download Main Stage, June 13 2010

There are very few guitarists in the world of rock who, in their own right, can command a middle ranking berth on Download’s final day main stage.

There are fewer still who can pull off a set so diverse, so dazzling and so utterly at one with the spirit of Castle Donington’s past, present and future that they seem like the most natural figurehead for a world renowned event.

Slash, of course, was making his fourth appearance at the famous metal haunt and the former GnR hero, more than most, must feel at home treading the Download boards. But in this guitar hero’s case familiarity hardly breeds contempt – exactly the opposite, in fact. The more we see of this this magnificent musician, the more we marvel at his brilliant showmanship. Guns Shoot For Leeds/Reading

Posted by simon On March - 29 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The brains behind Reading and Leeds 2010 have been keeping their powder dry but it’s fair to say they’ve pulled off something of a coup by pairing Guns N Roses with Blink 182 as two of this summer’s headline acts.

Whether Arcade Fire deserve their own top billing is open to debate – yes, we know they’re one of the best bands to emerge from North America for some time but do they really warrant a headline slot on the back of a couple of breakthrough discs?

Of course there will be those who are asking the same of Axl and his hired hands. They hardly pulled up any trees the last time they hit Leeds with the mysterious frontman’s famously lax timekeeping denying large swathes of the crowd the chance to see the bulk of a pretty tame set. Then again this is Axl Rose. And he’s a star. Read the rest of this entry »

Slash Back

Only last month Duff McKagan told rushonrock that the debut solo material recorded by former Guns N Roses colleague and Velvet Revolver band mate Slash as some of the best shit he’s heard in ages. And that’s just on the evidence of the first three tracks!

But it seems the major rock labels have been falling over themselves to secure the rights to what promises to be one of 2010′s must-have albums and those veteran campaigners Roadrunner have finally sealed the deal.

Interestingly the Spring 2010 release will be avialable first in the UK as part of a special package with Classic Rock magazine – the renowned publication producing a Slash special featuring the axe hero’s solo debut. Read the rest of this entry »

frank-turner-littleThe rock just keeps on coming and this week we’re delighted to bring you another rushonrock exclusive in the shape of a brand new interview with former Gunner, erstwhile Velvet Revolver and current frontman with punk rock troupe Loaded.

Yes, Duff McKagan’s checking in again ahead of his support slot with hot US band Black Stone Cherry – a bill also featuring one of the bass player’s favourite new bands in the shape of Parlor Mob. We can’t wait. But before then we have Papa Roach, Madina Lake and Heaven’s Basement playing Newcastle’s o2 Academy on Tuesday – plus Wolf at Trillians – and a gig-tastic weekend coming up.

Punk rock troubadour Frank Turner hooks up with Fake Problems to play Newcastle Uni on Saturday night while Bowling For Soup (Academy) go head to head with Richie Kotzen at Trillians on Sunday. And there’s more… Read the rest of this entry »

Slash Solo – The Verdict

Posted by simon On October - 1 - 2009 1 COMMENT

slashSlash’s new solo record will blow fans away according to one of the musicians who knows him best – and an individual who has heard at least three of the songs set to feature on the guitar hero’s much anticipated album.

Fellow former Gunner and Velvet Revolver band mate Duff McKagan laid down a track with Stoke’s finest earlier this week – completing a rhythm section which featured Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl. And that meaty collaboration is just the tip of an incredibly creative iceberg according to one of the people closest to Slash’s star-studded side project. Read the rest of this entry »

Duff Ditches Gunners – For Toon!

Posted by simon On September - 29 - 2009 1 COMMENT

duffLegendary Guns N Roses hero Duff McKagan has taken a leaf out of big mate Spike’s book and thrown his weight behind Newcastle United’s promotion push.

The Velvet Revolver and Loaded man is a mad keen sports fan and follows all of the sides in his home city of Seattle. But McKagan chose to follow Arsenal in the Premier League after catching the Gunners on ESPN. Read the rest of this entry »
