TWIGGY UPS STICKS

Posted by simon On August - 13 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Former Fables Last Stand axe slinger Twiggy has quit Tyneside for Los Angeles after realising a lifelong dream to pursue his music career in the USA.

Following Fables’ shock split earlier this year, the Newcastle-based guitarist has been writing songs with artists the world over.

And now Twiggy (pictured back, middle) is hooking up with famed hitmaker Holly Knight within spitting distance of the notorious Sunset Strip. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Quireboys & Fables Last Stand

@ Newcastle o2 Academy II, March 21 2010

This was the night when one of Newcastle’s hardest gigging bands suddenly went soft. And the result was quite spectacular.

With acoustic album Halfpenny Dancer winning rave reviews the Quireboys arrived home on quite a roll and only poorer than expected ticket sales threatened to knock the boys off their stride. Thankfully those who did make it to the upstairs room of Newcastle’s vacuous Academy raised the roof before raising their glasses to one of the region’s best kept cultural secrets. Fables Last (Ever?) Stand

Posted by simon On April - 22 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

It looks like one of the North East’s best loved rock bands is no more despite a barnstorming acoustic set opening up for the Quireboys in Newcastle last night.

Fables Last Stand songwriting duo Roachie (pictured) and Twiggy stripped down their sound for a 30-minute set and never sounded so good.

But it is understood the band is no more after both men agreed to go their separate ways immediately after the show. Bass player Alan quit Fables earlier this year and drummer Phil The Beat has taken up the stool with fellow local favourites Remedy. But both singer Roachie and axe hero Twiggy are ready to throw themselves into new projects with the former booked into Blast! Studios later this month and the latter mulling over a move to LA. This Week On RUSHONROCK

Posted by simon On March - 8 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

This week we welcome the return of hard gigging saviours of the UK rock and roll scene, New Generation Superstars, with an exclusive interview and a review of their latest show.

And if live reviews are what you like then we’re hoping to run the rule over Obituary, Trivium and A Day To Remember during the next few days.

There’s a stone cold classic in this week’s 12@12 as we whip out our white label version of much missed rockers White Trash. White who? If you missed their brilliant debut album back in the day you missed out. And there’s more. Read the rest of this entry »

May Days, May Days

Posted by simon On February - 25 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Geordie good time rock and rollers Fables Last Stand have postponed their scheduled tour to Finland until the summer after opting to pack in as many domestic dates as possible ahead of the release of their debut album.

The four-piece were due to tackle Scandinavia this month after talks with one of the region’s most active promoters. But the band will head across the North Sea in May after offers of various high profile support slots across the UK came flooding in. “It’ll be warmer in May,” joked singer Roachie. “But it’s probably warmer in Finland than it is here right now.” Read the rest of this entry »

This Week On RUSHONROCK – The Rock Feast

Posted by simon On February - 22 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Rarely can there have been so many great bands gigging at the same time and we’re responding by bringing you the rushonrock Rock Feast this week.

Mastodon have provided a meaty aperitif but it’s over to Lostprophets and Machine Head to share the main course duties.

And then there’s the sweet. And in this case the sweet sound of Europe as the sensational Swedes roll out the classics and a clutch of newies from their Last Look At Eden record. We’ve already reviewed Mastodon and we’ll rate the other three over the course of the next six days. But that’s not all. Read the rest of this entry »

Crave Revu

Posted by simon On February - 1 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

One of the live highlights of 2010 should be fast-rising 80s-style rock crew The Crave and the band are in the studio this week putting the finishing touches to their debut album.

You might have seen the boys backing Justin Hawkins’ Hot Leg (where are they now…) and Buckcherry last year and they’ll be back on the road throughout this year.

One of those dates includes a previously unscheduled stop in Newcastle at Legends and we’ll be finding out all about it later this week. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy New Year

Posted by simon On January - 1 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

And it should be a cracker as the likes of Maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, Lostprophets, Him, Cinderella, Airbourne and The Gaslight Anthem all prepare to unleash new rock in 2010.

We’re already looking forward to catching Kiss on their UK arena tour, AC/DC at Download and a whole load of other loud and proud rock and roll heroes strutting their stuff.

And we’ve got plenty of new ideas and features lined up for your favourite independent rock and metal website. For now we focus on the records to look out for this year.

Review – Fables Last Stand

Posted by simon On November - 25 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

fables cluny@ Gateshead The Three Tuns, November 25 2009

There are few better rock and roll venues in the North East right now than Gateshead’s The Three Tuns so stick one of the region’s finest emerging rock and roll bands on the stage and it’s a recipe for success.

Or at least it should be.

There’s no accounting for the gremlins which can destroy a set with one mean spirited swipe. And for a while it seemed Fables would be the latest unlucky foursome to fall prey to every band’s worst nightmare. Read the rest of this entry »

Your RUSHONROCK Week

Posted by simon On November - 9 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

quireboys paulThis week we celebrate Brit Rock – that sleazy, bluesy, hair metal-inspired movement which peaked around the late 80s and early 90s when a slew of great British bands back big record deals and crashed the charts with refreshing regularity.

There’s an exclusive chat with Quireboy Paul Guerin (pictured) plus a full review of the reissued A Bit Of What You Fancy and the chance for five lucky rushonrock readers to win a copy – featuring sleeve notes by our very own editor Simon Rushworth!

Then there’s another interview exclusive as former Little Angel Toby Jepson drops in for a chat. Ready to kick off a full UK tour in his role as frontman with the reformed Gun he’s in typically ebullient mood. Terrorvision hit The Vinyl Countdown and there’ll be an honourbale mention for Thunder somewhere along the line. But that’s not all folks…  Read the rest of this entry »
